sokka and yue’s romance in practice is fundamentally the corny surface of a story (that’s not only a love story, by the way, but also a tale of class, colonization, duty and sacrifice) so the dynamic is stiff and awkward and it can feel a little forced, but i believe that when you see the romance as the characters themselves interacting with each other in each of their true essence, the dynamic itself that sokka and yue share becomes a lot more interesting.

you have two teenagers who are willing to quite literally die if it means fulfilling their duty to the people they consider they are responsible for (yue’s being her tribe and possibly her father, sokka’s being katara, aang, and hakoda at the time). they share the same values of sacrifice and duty — as soon as yue histrionically confesses to sokka that she does like him, but that she simply cannot continue pursuing a relationship with him, he understands perfectly (because of course he does) and he makes it clear that he still wants to be her friend. however, the approach each of them take to the situation of having to sacrifice something on the behalf of someone else is surprisingly different. yue will burst into tears in the middle of the stairs of her palace about how being around sokka is too confusing, and about how the situation is so unfair and distressing and for that she must break all ties with him forever and ever, and sokka telling her that it should be fine because they agreed to be just friends in the tone that he says it after they kissed like twice, is not only very believable considering his character but also hilarious — sokka understands yue in this moment, of course, but what he fundamentally means when he says it is “just...... turn off your feelings??? it’s not that hard???”. whether this is by choice or because she just can’t help it, yue does not turn off her feelings, and sokka... is confused, to say the least. yue is already repressed by her external circumstances as a noble girl. as the one thing she is allowed to do is feel, the outlet she finds is the rawest possible form of her feelings, so she is loud, emotionally open, vulnerable and honest with her feelings, and she announces it to the world that her duty is in fact hurting her, even if she will always play the role and put herself last no matter what... and then there’s sokka. we all know sokka; he deflects, he represses, he closes off, he tries to fit himself in his role and pretends everything is fine. sokka is in charge of two little radioactive preteens who quite literally depend on him to survive. he is the oldest, he is a boy, he will not allow himself to feel when he has other more important things to do.

so yue will let her feelings spill like a waterfall and be known and she will at last do her duty, and sokka will swallow his feelings until he chokes and he will at last do his duty, and they fall in love in the middle somehow. the romantic interactions by themselves between the two are not all that great, least of all when you see it as merely sokka and yue falling in love, but rather their story fits a lot better and it becomes a lot deeper and more important when you see their story as sokka and yue, who are way too young and who never put themselves first and who carry too many people on their backs, finding it in themselves to fall in love with each other like that
