“You’re going to destroy this world..” “Not happily.” “I’ll have to stop you..”
Just crying over how sad it must have been for my Lavellan, don’t mind me :’)
It had seemed harder than before, which I would have laughed at had not the situation been so directed. I could still recall the sensation leading up to Crestwood--the borderline elation that had consumed me. My hands had trembled holding the reins to my mount. I was going to tell her everything. I was going to tell her whom I had been, so she could understand fully who I now am. Looking into her eyes, those eyes which haunt me still, I could see everything for which I had never allowed myself to even hope; love, trust...acceptance. It was the latter, I think, which broke my resolve. I would lose that. I would undoubtedly lose her acceptance. That, more than anything, was intolerable to me. Or so I had thought. I should have trusted her more than I clearly did, but hindsight presents a clarity I lacked at the time. Here I found myself, again torn by my self-doubt, which, more than anything else, colored my apprehension. How? How could she still look at me with those eyes? Eyes full of love, of heartbreak, of...trust? How could she not see me for who and what I am? I had cast an illusion upon her somehow, and she could not see past it. I did not deserve her love. Yet how could I break it? Standing there, holding her hands and fate in my own, feeling her lips in one flush of warmth for what would undoubtedly be the last time, how could I break the illusion and lose it all? I had to be firm. I had to be strong. She deserved strength. She deserved the entire world. I had to give it to her, even if she would never understand. "You must know who I am," I said, as gently as I could, my gaze holding hers captive. "I know you," she said, her voice breaking on the second word, the last coming as a mere whisper. She pulled her good hand free and used it to touch my cheek, the back of her fingers barely skimming my skin. I could have closed my eyes and been lost to this moment. I had to persist. "You know Solas," I rejoined, willing my eyes to keep their hold on hers, to not close and savor her touch. Her hand lingered on my cheek, and then her palm was cupping it, and it nearly shattered the will I had forged in the flames of centuries. "I am not Solas." "You are," she countered. "I don't know who you were before, but you're Solas now." There had always been a stubbornness in her that burned like desire. It gave her a strength of will the likes of which I had not seen since my people had walked this soil, and men had not yet sailed from their distant seas. "I am not. I am so much less than your estimation of me. So much more." Why was it so hard to say the name, the word, that defined who I was? Fen'Harel was a piece of me I could no more cast aside than the color of my eyes. Her jaw set in a way I had come to love. "You're Solas. Whatever you were before doesn't matter." "I am the fear children feel at night, in the dark. I am the fear of the elvhen. My name is a curse." She just looked at me, her eyes unchanging, uncomprehending. "You know my name," I whispered. "Solas," she repeated, stubborn as a druffalo. I could have laughed if my throat was not choking on my heart. "No, vhenan," I said, unable to keep the word from my mouth. Her eyes seemed brighter, glazed with tears. Some words could not be contained; others could not be coaxed, no matter how desperate I was to have her understand. She must understand. "That is but a mask I wear." "You are Solas," she said, whispering again, her voice strained. How could I explain when I could not say the word? I broke contact with her to stoop down and pick up a small, smooth stone that fit comfortably in my palm. I closed my fingers tightly around it, making a fist. It grew hot to my touch, so hot, molten, burning--I held it until it was liquid, and then still. It went from hot to cold, a shock of sensation until it was a new shape, a new form, a new substance. Then I took her hand, her living hand, and placed the coin I had made in her palm. Inscribed in its face was a roughly hewn image of a wolf, howling, and on the tail, a wolf grinning a wicked grin. "Those who followed me, centuries ago, would carry these blightèd stones as a ward against mischief. This is who I am." She held the coin, but would not let her gaze leave mine. Her fingers folded over it slowly, her eyes burning. "I don't..." "Look at it, vhenan." Her eyes became glassy and her jaw tightened. Finally, after moments I thought would never end, our breathing united and strained, her gaze dropped. Her fingers, callused and long, fingertips almost stained with magic, parted enough to show the relief upon the coin. "The dread wolf," she said, her voice soft, "is only dreaded by his enemies." Her eyes rose and her gaze, burning, met mine. "I am not your enemy. I am your vhenan, now and always." I could not form words. I could barely hold her gaze as I took her hand. How could I deny it? How could I deny the truth of her words? She was my vhenan. She would always be my vhenan. Always. I turned my back, holding the anchor tightly, whatever was left of my heart crumpling beneath the weight of our future. I stepped through the eluvian, sealing it behind me. The anchor pulses in my grip. There was much to be done. Always.
I rarely listen to music, and I don’t even have a playlist of the stuff I DO like, so when I got tagged in another music meme (by @fatale-distraction, @bearlytolerable & @galadrieljones - I will do that in a bit), I decided to actually make a playlist of some old favorites. This lead me to remember this Rammstein song, and it gave me SUCH Solavellan feels, so here you go, come to hell with me.
Rammstein - Wo Bist Du
English Lyrics Translation, courtesy of lyricstranslate.com (as my German in not strong enough for a written translation)
I love you I don't love you.. I don't love you any more... I don't love you any more...
I don't love you any more Or less than you... Than you did When you still did.
Beautiful girls are not beautiful, Warm hands are so cold, All clocks have stopped, Laughing is no longer healthy and soon...
I'll be searching for you behind the light, Where are you? Where are you? I don't want to be so alone, Where are you? Where are you?
Beautiful girls are not beautiful, Warm hands are so cold, All clocks have stopped, Laughing is no longer healthy and soon...
I'll be searching for you behind the light, Where are you? Where are you? I don't want to be so alone, Where are you? Where are you? I've been searching for you under every stone, Where are you? Where are you? I fall asleep with a knife, Where are you? Where are you?
Another of the New Years giveaways gifts. This one is for @mintyasgardianfreshness of their Lavellan Elise being comforted by Solas.
