Link comes to as the moon rises – and a good thing, too. It's a blood moon, and he doesn't know what else might be rising with it. Something tough, if his headache is any indication. He'd been… knocked out? No. Passed out. After a hard fight… oh, he remembers now. Gloom spawn. He'd won, but it had been a close one.

He takes stock, hurriedly: He's at the Kolomo Garrison ruins. Riverside Stable isn't far. As the sky washes with red moonlight – not the cursed light that comes when a gloom spawn has sighted him, not yet – he scrapes his gaze over the ruins. Something feels very off.

It's probably the fact that most of his gear is missing.

Lavenza's hand covered his before he could remove it from the card. She closed her eyes and Akechi felt a flutter against the back of his hand, like the brush of a wing. "Your bond might do…" she said, very quietly. Akechi felt it again – that terrible lurch of hope. Then she opened her eyes and pinned him with her gaze. "Given time."

"Time?" Akechi asked, pulling his hand away. "He's in a coma. I may or may not be able to rouse him long enough for a few witty rejoinders. Hardly fortifying when we— when our bond is— in the state it's in." It's complicated didn't begin to cover it.

"Do humans not watch over loved ones as they sleep? Or when they are ill?"

Akechi bit down hard on the instinct to argue. Hadn't he wanted a solution? "Are you telling me to go spend time with him?"

Akechi landed sprawled on top of Ren, the horrible bed giving an alarming clatter and creak under them. He was scrambling to push himself up when Ren's arms closed around him.

Relief ambushed him; he hadn't planned how to wake Ren, what to do next, any further step than returning to dreaming, and he was caught completely off guard by the feeling of being pulled close, by one hand cradling the back of his head and tucking his face down, a drowsy voice murmuring, "Shh, go back to sleep."

Akechi collapsed onto Ren and breathed him in while Ren made a happy-sounding hum. It took two breaths for his brain to catch up to him, and another two before he found the will to shove himself up.

Ren's eyes opened. Akechi could see the sleep leaving them, the sharpness returning. Ren frowned. "You again."

"Good, you're awake," Akechi said. He slid off of Ren and to the edge of the bed. He had no idea why Ren had woken this time, though he supposed it would be difficult for anyone to plausibly stay asleep when someone landed on them from a great height. "Lavenza's in trouble."

Ren was brewing coffee behind the counter, but Akechi couldn't smell it. He was sitting on his usual stool, watching, but Ren didn't seem to know he was there. Akechi propped his chin on his hand. "Dream," he said. "But yours or mine?"

Akechi paced a dream beach, his mind not really on the dreamer or his task. He would be conspicuous enough in his ultramarine crew clothes that the dreamer should note him and that was enough. He was thinking of Ren. He was trying to remember.

It was no easier here, in a dream, than it had been awake in his office. The question stuck in his mind like a popcorn kernel wedged behind a back tooth. Had he said something in their conversation after Maruki left that made Ren betray him? Had Ren just needed the idea of Akechi's impending demise to sink in?

He could remember figuring this out. He'd talked to Ren, that was how he'd done it. Or… or had he? Was that just some idea Maruki had planted in Akechi's mind to make him docile, to bind him more closely to Ren?

He was a wreck and he wasn't getting out of this tangle of thoughts on his own. So, he was going back to Ren. He'd been on this beach long enough. It was time.

"How the hell are you in a coma?" Akechi demanded of the sleeping Ren. Ren shifted slightly, just the normal movement of someone asleep. He was under the blankets. Outside, it was raining steadily. Akechi could feel the damp in the air.

He stalked over to the desk. "This isn't a message for me at all," he said, glaring at the tarot cards. "It's some weird symbolism your subconscious cooked up." Burned bonds, and Ren in a coma. Interesting. "I think you've slept long enough." He grabbed the Fool and wrenched it from the desk.

Ren shot upright with a gasp, clutching his chest, staring around wildly. "Fuck," he said. "Ow. What the fuck, Goro?"

"You tell me." Akechi dropped the card on the desk and stood at the foot of Ren's milk-crate bed, arms crossed. "Why am I currently haunting your coma dream?"

"I'm ready to wake up now," Akechi said, though he couldn't take his eyes from Ren, sleeping peacefully before him. The dream didn’t end and Akechi gave in to the temptation to draw closer. He'd had a shock, he could take a moment to process, yes? Yes. He sat on the edge of Ren's horrible bed. Ren didn't stir so Akechi indulged in another moment of processing.
