Well. Oh boy. Jack. Where do I even. You see. Uh. First of all sorry in advance because this caught me in the middle of giffing this guy and being emotional about him and quite frankly ridiculously insane about this stupid fucking show in general. Second of all funny you should say that because well. Short answer yes he is in fact their son. He is very much their son. (And then also Sam’s in a way and then also the Literal Devil's in another and then also, technically, and I shit you not. The son of the President of the United States of America. That last one just never gets addressed ever again which honestly makes it even more fucking hilarious.)

*deep sigh* and listen I mean even the short explanation here is going to be an unnecessarily convoluted soap opera-flavored roller coaster lol so bear with me. But essentially: this kid is a half angel, half human who was pretty much primed to be a hugely destructive Rosemary's Baby type of event but instead up and decided to imprint on Cas while in the womb, so he forgoes any ties to his actual father in favor of Cas becoming like capital D Dada to him. Buuut then both Cas and Jack’s mom (Cas' circumstantial platonic bestie) die when Jack is born—conveniently as a fully grown adolescent because, well. hand-wavy Devil baby magic—so Sam and Dean have to keep an eye on him, therefore becoming parents 3 and 4. And then on top of the whole Shit, This Kid is Possibly the Antichrist on Account of the Whole His Father is the Actual Devil business, Sam (coincidentally enough himself being a Devil-related quote unquote freak and also the other kid Dean raised in his lifetime, for whatever that's worth) identifies with him and tries to be the kind guiding hand to steer him right, whereas Dean channels the ever-looming ghost of his father just acts like a grief-stricken terrified angry widower who can't even look at this very powerful, possibly very malicious kid who calls Dean's freshly killed boy best friend his father while simultaneously being the inciting incident for Cas' death in the first place, albeit through no fault of his own. And who, y'know, kinda looks like Cas, too, adding insult to injury. And Dean comes around pretty quickly given the circumstances and actually starts trying, but despite him initially being more of an asshole than strictly necessary, Jack pretty much immediately starts looking up to him and copying him in particular, which. Unsurprising to see on the Cursed Parent-Child Trauma Cycles Show, but ouch, man. The Cycles!

Anyway. There’s a shit ton more context and baggage and oh-so-typically unexplored dynamics there but all of this to say: yes in every narrative and functional and emotional sense he very much is their literal half-angel half-human son. But also it's weird. But also he has a lot of dads. But mainly, he’s Cas’ very much beloved kid. Who also happens to have a complicated, show-typical daddy issues-ridden parent/child relationship with Dean in a way that's markedly different than the one he has with Sam and is also so very juicy. And who for some reason looks a lot like Cas and a bit like Dean (tbh to me it's only sometimes for the latter if you pay attention to some of the mannerisms but I get it I can kind of see it) and not at all like his biological father. And who, from the second he is first mentioned on screen until the end of the show, ends up being both a huge factor in Dean and Cas literally divorcing breaking apart and coming back together again, as well as in the direction of the whole narrative.

All of which could mean nothing and does not drive me crazy one bit, of course.

also he’s just a fun character that had a lot of potential (were this not, regrettably, the CW's Supernatural, more of it would've been fulfilled. so it goes.) also I love him a lot. here he is again

to me, they’ve been together before there was even any concept of “being together” between them. that sort of childhood best friends to lovers where nothing ever really changes, the lines just blur, all of the usual rules and boundaries melted away in favour of this bone-deep understanding and easy affection. they don’t have words for it, don’t use words for it — they’re just blink and mush. everyone knows that.

they have no real idea when their anniversary would be, when their first kiss was shared, what their first date was. it had all felt so totally natural that it had never occurred to either of them to check the calendar, take note of it, at the time. they’d been sat together in one of their usual spots and when mush had leaned forwards and kissed blink, it had felt sort of like it’d been that way forever — like that clumsy press of lips had always been there between them. the first was just the first of many, hadn’t felt significant in itself. although they’d both gotten better at it.

(blink was a better kisser to begin with. he’s dated girls, messed around with them over the years. mush had never been interested. just waited the short while for blink to come back — which he always did, straight back to mush with stories to tell, jokes to make.)

they absolutely plan a life together. both of them are too realistic to get too fantastical with it, but they get just as much joy talking about the work they’ll get, the little apartment they’ll buy and live in together — “as friends,” mush teases. “plenty young men live together as friends. bachelors.” — and how life will be without the streets breathing down their necks. they’re under no real illusion they’ll ever live Normal lives, they know things will always be difficult for them. but they’ve got the “us against the world” mentality, y’know? they can face anything so long as they’ve got each other.

though the both of them have grown up in this environment where they’ve never really been able to trust anything or anyone, they can trust each other. they’re each other’s constant. and there can definitely be an edge of unhealthiness to it sometimes, but, well. they can have a little codependency. as a treat.

This was a reread. I read an animal transformation fic (and then several more) and it made me want to reread this one, where Winter Soldier! Asset! Bucky is transformed into a dog and (unsurprisingly) gets adopted by a lonely Steve. They are what each other needs, and this is a beautiful, touching ultimately feel good story.

First things first, leveragehunters’ On a Pale Horse is one of my favourite Stucky fics, so I was predisposed to a) like a Bucky is a horse transformation fic and b) compare any horse transformation fics to that one. This story really stands up. It’s different enough that it doesn’t feel rehashed, and the essential things I love about On a Pale Horse (winning trust, equine devotion, essential goodness of the ‘rider’ character, stubborn not-a-horse antics) are all here.

Second things second, I was a horsey girl growing up. I love horses. I loved that so much of this story was about building trust between Steve and horse!Bucky, and I enjoyed all the talk about halters and lunging.

This story has so much heart and humour. There’s the usual gang (Sam is delightful here), and such a kind, stubborn, good Steve. I really adored it.

*Examines fingernails* so, you know that animal transformation fic reading binge I mentioned earlier? This is the last one. In fact, I went to leveragehunters’ AO3 page looking for On a Pale Horse (have I said how much I love that fic enough yet?) after reading The Winter Stallion, and found this story instead. It’s a Ladyhawke AU. I had to google what Ladyhawke was, and didn’t bother until after I’d read the fic. You don’t need to know anything about the film to enjoy this story. It is set in a medieval fantasy world and features my favourite flavour of pre-serum Steve (stubborn, slightly bitter, quick and with so much innate goodness, honour and self-sacrificing idiocy). He falls in with the unlikely, bickering and mysteriously-cursed duo of Bucky (grumpy, oddly vulnerable, ultimately awesome) and Sam, who is kind, witty and Sam (is there ever a bad Sam?). Also, importantly, there is a horse and he is the best horse (just ask Bucky).

We are (briefly) back to the real world after my animal transformation fic spree. And oh my goodness, if you read nothing else on this list, read this fic. It’s a Winter Soldier recovery fic except that it isn’t, it’s a Steve recovery fic. Steve has all his powers in this story, but he is so human. He is brave and loyal and snarky, but he is also so, so vulnerable, and this story shows him feeling lost and little and hurt in a way that not many stories do. Bucky is equally awesome - he’s so clearly the Bucky of the 1930’s whose main objective was keeping Steve safe. This story also has one of my favourite versions of Tony as a side character.

Alright, we have skipped happily back into medieval fantasy land for this fic. It features another of my favourite kinds of AU Steves. He’s strong and clever and has proven himself in battle, and has the confidence that goes with that, but he still remembers being the scared young man defending his village with tools not weapons. He’s honorable and down to earth, strategic but also so open to love. This fic has some of my favourite tropes (identity porn! Forbidden love! So much pining!) and is such a fun romp through this ‘swords and honour’ landscape.

And now a different kind of swords and honour. I’m very late to the party in reading this, but if you haven’t come across this Shrunkyclunks story, then do yourself a favour and settle in to read. This fic has so much humour, warmth and passion with a side of politics (but in a good way!) Bucky is a civil rights attorney, and the fact that the story is tagged for period typical homophobia and transphobia and is set in the modern day tells you the rest.

But what this story does really well is make you passionate and pissed off (alongside Bucky and Steve) about civil rights, whilst primarily being a romance story that is fun and positive. There are so many deft character touches as well that round out the supporting cast into lovable, memorable individuals (Yelena!!).

In which MCU-verse Bucky and Steve retire and move to Florida. Steve gets into surfing and Bucky is busy gardening. Okay, my summary sucks but this story is brilliant. I’m a sucker for fic where the author clearly knows their shit. Florida is sketched so well in this story that it’s practically its own character. The story is about how being in this place (that is shown for all its wonders, flaws, and idiosyncrasies) is challenging, helping and healing a Bucky and Steve who are both in pretty bad shape at the beginning.

This is an A/B/O AU set during WW2. Omega! Pre-serum!Steve is a mathematical genius recruited to try to break Nazi codes. There’s the right amount of codebreaky detail which goes into (to me - someone who knows nothing about codes) impressive depth and feels very authentic. This story is just getting started, but so far the characters are great (there’s an excellent supporting cast - Darcy and Wanda are early faves), and Steve is such a good mix of physical frailty and mental power. I’m interested to see how the A/B/O elements play into the story as it progresses. The setting and moreso the feel of the setting - the frustration, desperation and guilt as the team struggle to make sense of the codes and inform troop movements - is really well-realised and gripping.

WIP Wednesday

I was tagged by both @blurglesmurfklaine and @somanywords so time to share for WIP Wednesday! I actually did spend some time writing today but was cut short/limited due to period cramps trying to kill me. Anyway! I'm actually pretty close to finishing chapter 2 of the juggling AU!

“What did I–” Jack groaned– “Maybe he did something to me.” “Uh-huh,” David said, unimpressed. “He was really angry last night.” “We were talking to our mom. We had an argument.” Jack shrugged. “It happens.” “And you can still apologize,” David said firmly. “Do it for me, so I don’t have to deal with him sulking. I didn’t know it was possible to silently read a textbook that loudly.” “That doesn’t even make sense, Davey.” Jack smiled. “But I’ll talk to him after practice.” He glanced over to where Race was juggling rings. “He’ll bite my head off if I do it now.” “Right,” David said. “Just let me know if you need me to stay out of our room for a bit.” “Race doesn’t like talking about serious shit,” Jack said suddenly. “Just, y’know. If you guys ever get into a fight.” David raised his eyebrows. “Even with you?” “Only on his terms,” Jack explained.

This isn't what I wrote today, but what I wrote today was less dramatic (Sarah and Katherine being cute but also afraid to make a move) so here we are
