Mistletoe, huh? MWAH. 💋
Christmas is not going according to plan.
Having her trip cancelled had been celebrated by nearly everybody on base, under the assumption she would rather be with them than working. Nothing could’ve been farther from the truth. Hana sighs, raking a hand through her hair as she takes another shot. Everybody’s been incredibly bright and festive and nice about it, but God she’s tired of pretending this is okay.
It’s her first year without her parents in any capacity.
Her normal holidays are busy, sure, but being still means dying in most situations, and it certainly isn’t untrue for her mental health. She’s a bit tipsy by the time she finally wobbles out of her room to the commons, the beginnings of decorations up as various new recruits and familiar faces filter about. She was supposed to be visiting graves, Hana notes sourly. It feels wrong.
It’s not tradition, and she doesn’t know what to do with herself that doesn’t involve smelling eighteen varying shades of incriminating. The drinking’s one thing, and the stress smoking is another. She makes a point of smiling as brightly as she’s able when she passes by Brigitte on her way to the mess, making up some excuse or another about running to get the dip for the party.
Everything’s kind of a red and green blur between that moment and sometime in the middle of the fucking party.
She knows she talks to people and acts the part, makes something of a scene of shooing Finn away when he bothers to come hovering around. Lú has picked up on it, she can tell from the way he looks at her, and avoids him for the rest of the party. She doubts he would’ve brought it up, but in that moment, any chance of anyone talking about it makes her want to vanish.
She wants to dance until she can’t feel her legs, and drink until the songs become nothing more than one bassline after the next. She dedicates the rest of the party to getting close to both, filtering through some new recruits as dance partners.
Hana’s avoided the mistletoe, though, up until the point that she’s taking a break. She doesn’t pay much attention to whose approached her or why, but there are very few people on base she isn’t willing to kiss like it’s her last night alive. What started as an innocent peck swiftly becomes her halfway attempting to pull whoever it is on top of her against the wall, until her brain finally processes three very important pieces of information.
One, her makeout partner had introduced themselves with, hey chica, mistletoe. Chica, as far as Hana is aware, is very Spanish. She does not want to be kissing Kauboi, which brings her to realization two - the voice was definitely female. And the body (wow, the body). Whoever it was, she was Spanish, not Kauboi, and a great kisser and -
Holy fuck it’s Sombra.
Oh fuck, it’s Sombra.
That’s the third and most important realization, as Hana firmly plants her hands on the other woman’s shoulders and pushes back with the most disgusted look she can muster. “What the - um, ew?” She makes a grand show of seeming repulsed as some new recruit swings by singing, of all things, Feliz Navidad, off-key, swaying back into the party. God, she hates Christmas. “You… you aren’t supposed to be here! What the - gguh jjyeo! Ugh! Gross. Gross, gross, gross!”
❂
Leave it to Sombra to get them a single fucking bed.
Hana’s getting tired of waking up draped across someone she’s supposed to barely like (likes a little more than she should) who pity fucked her back when. That’s the shitty history of their relationship beyond the platonic, barring an entire prank war, and she’s got no urge for round two, pity for days.
So maybe it’s a combination of being frustrated that Sombra keeps making moves and frustrated that she can’t allow herself to act on them that sends her off in the middle of the day, Tokki trotting along beside her. Paris hadn’t been somewhere she could vanish, given the sheer number of people, but this little piece of quiet in Mexico? Totally her jam. People bump into her and they don’t say sorry at all, let alone profusely. It’s a type of calm she hasn’t known in years, recognised as she is back home or in Hollywood, and Hana vaguely considers the fact that she really needs to travel more.It was only supposed to have been a little under a month in Paris, but it’s stretching into nearly two a bit of here and there, and she can’t say she’s sorry she hasn’t gotten back to base. MEKA isn’t going to call on her with the Gwishin gone, and her formal discharge papers are probably sitting somewhere in a thick stack of mail for her back in Gibraltar. It’s one of the few things she left behind, and though she misses Angela and Lú and a few of the others more than life itself, she figures it’s fair to need some time. She hasn’t exactly had any since she was fourteen, and at twenty-one, that’s starting to feel like an actual weight, and as good as she is at carrying, maybe it’s time to stop.So she does, and if it has to be with Sombra, that’s fine. She wakes up in a cold sweat more often than not, and she’s making her peace with someone else seeing that on the regular. As long as they don’t talk about it, she’ll survive. Hana exhales, the first fingers of dawn tearing across the early morning sky as she finishes off a cigarette (they taste different in Mexico - not bad, just different) and snuffs it out under a trainer she wouldn’t have been caught dead in if she’d thought for a second there was a chance of cameras.Well, there’s always a chance, the odds just seem spectacularly low around here. She’s not into the idea of finding out if the early morning has a work rush of any sort, though Hana kind of doubts it, and so she calls it a night and heads back. Sombra’s probably just about to go to sleep, considering her fucking insane schedule, so maybe she’ll catch a nap with her before she starts her day. She doesn’t have any plans, and it’s simultaneously freeing and absolutely terrifying, and that’s been her life every day since they left. Get up, do whatever she thinks of doing, go down, repeat. It takes her longer to get back than she plans, stopping a few times to interact with some kids who lost their football and having a half conversation in a combination of the handful of words she’s learnt in Spanish (by osmosis, she’s pretty sure) and the little English the woman out with the most hideous dog she’d ever seen knew. And then she was holding the hideous dog, and she was finally almost back. From what she gathered, it needed a home. And, well, okay, it vibrated, and it was drooling, and it had pissed no less than five times on her waltz back to the hotel, and it was possibly blind and/or deaf, and it was so small she was almost positive Tokki, who was still growing, could probably be filled with at least eighteen of it... but, well, who knew. Maybe Sombra’d like it.The room’s dark as sin and still when she comes in, barring the bit of light Sombra seems to emit. Being part supercomputer, or whatever. She’s beyond wondering about the implants at this stage, and everything she knows about Sombra means that it’s going to remain another mystery. It’s not like she can judge anybody for defence mechanisms at this point in her life. The hideous dog wheezes and snorfles as Tokki peeks up from Sombra’s other side in the bed, ears pricked and eyes massive. She doesn’t move otherwise, which draws attention to two things. The first, is that she’s clearly trying her best to curl up with Sombra. The second, is that Sombra’s not having a great go of sleep. Well. That’s either some serious role reversal, or she just hasn’t been around to see Sombra have a fitful night before. Hana frowns, and shifts the dog in her hands to somewhere out to the left. She’s pretty sure it’s peeing again anyway, and she needs the right hand to shake Sombra by the shoulder. “Hey. Wake up.” It’s calmer than she might’ve been if she wasn’t remembering the however many times Sombra’d said nothing about her waking up sobbing or gasping or whatever else, so this is about the lease she can do. “I got you something.”
Honeymoon Hell Pt. 2
((The ballad of shitty sleeping situations.)) Hana’s no stranger to tossing and turning. It’s been her reality for the past few years at this point, ever since she lost her parents. The war made it worse, because while every waking moment with Sombra is a nightmare, her nightmares can make those look like a fantasy. She doesn’t take long to fall asleep in the hotel bed, unsurprisingly, the hacker’s breathing behind her more of a comfort than she would have cared to admit under most circumstances. It’s someone else, though, alive and sharing a room with her, and just for a moment, it’s easy to think she’s back in the barracks. It could be Dae-suk, for all her unconscious self knows when she starts into memories, shells and bombs so loud she was certain that, without her headset, she probably never would have heard anything again. She wakes up to the usual echo of someone calling out for her as she plunges into the sea, eyes snapping open with a strangled cry as her heart beats a war song in her chest. There’s a steadier heartbeat under her ear, and Hana tries to decipher what on Earth that could possibly mean. It’s too soft to be Dae-suk, all cut muscle and bone, and it’s too large to be Mi-na. It’s too alive to be any of them. It takes a moment before she can reconcile the reality of her situation, the first fingers of dawn stretching around the edges of the blackout curtains in the suite. Right. She’s in Hell. She’d forgotten. (She’d been in Hell so many times, they had been doomed to start blurring together.) The carefully constructed pillow wall is no more, some of them on her other side as she lays pressed against Sombra like a lifeline. Their legs are so tangled she’s not sure there is a good way to remove herself from the situation anymore, and if she was clinging to her much tighter, or had her head pressed any more firmly against her chest, anyone wandering by might have thought she was trying to squeeze the life out of her. This is not what she wanted, and Hana struggles with the concept of having to start the day like this. She holds her breath and counts, one, two, three… and does not move. For all that she knows what’s real and what isn’t, the steady thrum of Sombra’s heart under her left ear is enough to convince her to stay and pretend to be asleep, eyes sliding shut. Just for a minute, she promises herself, until she can find her bearings. Maybe she’ll be lucky, and Sombra will be quiet for five fucking minutes for once. It’s doubtful, but hey, everybody needs dreams. @5om8ra
the time i thought of you 👀
Hana goes out of her way not to think of Sombra.
It’s nothing personal (well, okay, it is), but she has no desire to spend time thinking about someone who’s done such a great job of antagonizing her. Most days, various missions, initiatives, her career(s) or others keep her preoccupied, and she doesn’t spare the hacker a single thought.
Other days, however, are harder. Sometimes, just rarely, she wonders what happened to Sombra to make her into this online force with no name. They’ve never met in person, at least, not the first time Sombra comes up for her, which makes it almost comical when she’s signing autographs at some arcade and spies a pair of brothers playing skeeball, and that bitch of a hacker is the only one who comes to mind.
Hana bites back her laugh at the time, because it is honestly ridiculous how angry she gets. Who hacks skeeball? Just to beat her?
In the months that follow, Sombra becomes less of an ephemeral annoyance and something more tangible. She’s with Overwatch now, or so she claims, and that means a whole slew of very messy things, though Hana’s narrowed down her issues to just a few:
Nobody really knows if they can trust her, she’s way too hot for this world, and all of a sudden, she sees her in everything.
The last is the biggest problem, because she doesn’t want to think about Sombra. She’s never wanted anything less, in fact, but Hana sees her around base and, in time, the rest of the world, in the smallest things.
It starts with a pair of gloves. They weren’t her gloves by any means (who else attached fake nails to them?), and she wonders how long it took Sombra to perfect that technology. Had she done it alone? Had she had help?
Did Sombra have anyone?
It’s the last question that bothers her the most, and she goes out of her way to befriend and attempt to understand this woman. Every little thing she learns about her prompts a million more questions in some dizzying, frustrating descent into what Hana has become certain is Sombra-induced madness.
She gets drunk one night and finds that even hard liquor makes her think of her, and that’s the final straw. She needs to stop, she tells herself. It isn’t normal to dedicate this much of her time to someone she isn’t sure how to feel about. Friends, enemies, whatever.
She goes back to the arcade a few weeks later, though, some photo op for some contest winning fans, and sees the skeeball machines again and almost loses it. She needs to talk to her, certainly, but she has no idea what she’s supposed to say. ‘Hey, stop torturing me without even doing anything, thanks,’ comes to mind, but it feels a little too vague and a little too on the nose at the same time.
She learns quickly enough that no amount of information will satisfy her curiosity when it comes to Sombra, and refuses to ask too many questions for fear of her just shutting down.
The worst thing that could happen to a person, after all, is being left alone with things that remind you of people who are no longer there. Hana would know. She’s done this before.
Well shit.
D.va x Sombra: Multiplayer problems
What to do when you saw a hacker? You call another one.
my spanish might be a bit off, but here she is! i made a post earlier about this but like. i really want to elaborate. i’d be happy with just about anything, but i think i’d be happiest with ‘inspired college student vibe’? i want her not to be edgy and full of vengeful motives, but a powerful activist. think lucio, but more inclined to violence. i discussed a scenario in which her girlfriend is sleeping in her room at talon and she has to phone over to gabe asking him to keep his music down so her GF can sleep. she’s working on some government firewalls in the background, of course, but she loves her gf a lot.
i like the fact that she speaks spanish canonically- i’m a big fan of latinx gabe, but it’s really nice to see a character who is unashamedly mexican. i can only hope she isn’t hopelessly whitewashed somehow.
(i’m also lowkey really digging sombraxhana, i’m hoping sombra is in her early EARLY 20s though, i don’t think i’d be comfortable with an age gap larger than three or four years? that being said, the hilarity of jack, lena, and hana having talon-affiliated SOs cracks me up.)
so yeah! just some doodles. expect more out of me soon, this game is ruining my life.
