On Patronuses
So I have been getting a few people saying they expected Santana's (and therefore Brittany's) Patronus to be a Unicorn in Something Kinda Different. I had actually been debating this myself while writing the story because yes, on first instinct I think everyone would expect Brittany to be a Unicorn (or a duck). But I decided not to have her's be a Unicorn based on the fact that a Unicorn is a mythical creature.
Understanding that, look at all the Patronuses from the Harry Potter stories (both in the movies and in the books). Based on some light research and just being a fan in general, it is very uncommon for a witch or wizard to have a Patronus which is a mythical/magical creature. In fact, I believe the only Patronus that isn't a normal animal is Dumbledore's (which is a Phoenix I think). Therefore, only an extremely powerful witch or wizard would have the skill/strength/capability of conjuring a Unicorn Patronus.
Now, this isn't to say that Santana isn't all of the above. But remember that they are still at Hogwarts, and Dumbledore... well that's self explanatory and the story represented Santana's first time casting a Patronus and discovering the magic behind it. Someone's Patronus may change throughout their lives so perhaps, as they grow older and more mature, Santana would have the ability to conjure a Unicorn Patronus. But until then, I decided to have her Patronus be a swan; beautiful and graceful just like Brittany. Also, swans mate for life so... that too.
Anyway, just wanted to get that out there! If anyone disagrees or wants to throw their debate in, feel free. I love a good conversation about this kind of stuff.
