Hey! Me again! This blog still active?
Hiya! Yes, this blog is still active- I haven’t been able to keep up with drawing as much as I want to- what with work and school; I’m still finishing my current semester at my college, but I still check in from time to time!
What would it be like for a child growing up in Junkertown? This includes all stages of childhood, from birth to eighteen years.
As someone who hates children so much I don’t even like to think about them, I’m not sure why I was asked this particular question. I am distinctly unqualified to answer it but I’ll do my best since you took the time to ask it.
1) I think most children rarely survive past two years of age due to the incredible amount of lingering radiation and poor healthcare services available.
2) There is likely high fatality for mothers as well
3) Most of the population is probably sterile anyway
4) Any children that do survive probably have a better chance if they’re inside the walls. Since Roadhog and Junkrat live on the outside we can assume other people also live outside the walls.
5) With no frame of reference, anyone growing up in Junkertown wouldn’t know anything else and would find their childhood normal, even if it wasn’t.
6) We don’t get to see much of Junkertown beyond the payload, but it’s obviously enormous so it’s not impossible to imagine that there are children living in some ramshackle houses eating Chinese Takeout and thinking this is how everyone in the whole world lives.

I mean like anywhere, your childhood would vastly differ depending on where you were born and such, but in Junkertown… it’s all pretty much shit. I’m almost certain there would be a child limit per couple; one less mouth to feed and all that. Over time I’d imagine birth defects to be more prominent (assuming Junkertown remains in the state it’s in). I don’t think it’s a good idea to have a child in Junkertown at all - in fact, I doubt anyone who lives there truly wants a family at all.
I think most people decide to leave eventually…if they have anything going for them. They can move on, and out, to bigger and better things, better places… but obviously, that’s easier said than done. That’s not exactly accessible to everyone… so people would try to avoid starting families at all here but of course, accidents happen.
Let’s say (for the sake of an example) someone DOES decide to have a child in Junkertown. It’s not the most sanitary place, so a natural birthing would likely have to happen away from Junkertown itself, outside and away from the radiation as much as possible in the least contaminated body of water, as possible. Your baby doesn’t have any side effects from the radiation and as soon as you’re able to, with the help of whoever’s gone with you, you’ll return back to Junkertown.
Children are scarce, for the reasons I mentioned before. That’s going to be one lonely kid - don’t worry, the better half of Junkertown’s residents will act as family members. They will likely receive little to no formal education unless the parents take it upon to teach themselves whatever they know. There’s no problem school system/curriculum, so depending on how intelligent/devoted the adults are to the child’s teachings, the outcome of the child could be drastically different.
Still, information is available - just not in Junkertown. I’d imagine the Queen controls what is and isn’t allowed… almost hand picked. Brainwashing. Selective education. Her propaganda against the outside world is shit. Fear mongering and keeping the younger generations ignorant is how she keeps her power. Keep them strong, keep them stupid - that’s her mentality. With that, she can control anything.
Older people, like Roadhog, know what life was like before Junkertown came to be. They know it’s bullshit, but speaking out against her isn’t a smart idea. They must be complicit if they choose to stay… but you’re free to leave Junkertown if you want. This would likely result in an ill-informed, uneducated child to be almost brainwashed (by our standards). However, if a young child seeks out knowledge on their own, learning more and more about the world beyond Junkertown, I can’t imagine they’d want to stay. Maybe dream of leaving.
I could go on and on, but as you can tell a lot of these are circumstantial. I really believe there aren’t many children in Junkertown because over time, they wouldn’t last. Radiation would make it difficult to have children, and nobody would want to start a family there anyways. In short, those that DO want a better life would leave Junkertown. The ignorant ones who stay there and try to have a kid will be met with nothing but hardships and misery.
STILL, though babies may be a pain in the ass, older children that can somewhat handle themselves are okay. Similar to my theory about Junkers kidnapping romantic partners outside of Junkertown, I can see young babies and toddlers being abducted as well. There’s a population cap. When there’s too many children at a time, new pregnancies will not be allowed - At some point, your options are to either have an abortion, or leave. She wouldn’t allow them. I don’t mean the ban would last forever, because obviously how could a society live you can’t have more people? Just until the existing kids are old enough to fend for themselves (15ish). As they are needed, more children (I’d say 7 is the *average* age for outside children to be abducted, then brought back to Junkertown for “proper” raising).
I’m sorry if this wasn’t the answer you were looking for, but I couldn’t see myself sugarcoating it... Junkertown is shit LOL. My hcs for the Queen are problematic as fuck but c’mon. Look at the disparity of her wealth in comparison to those of her people, her land...
How would each merc react to riding a horse for the first time?
