Every town as a legend, one that every person who lives there has heard. A legend passed down generation after generation. Point Place was no different. A small, nothing bit of a town, that most people have never heard off, had a history that would shock people. Point Place had The Curse of Calabrese Corner. The story was that the Calabrese Mob family out of Chicago used Point Place as their hiding place for booze during prohibition. There was a huge unused warehouse called Calabrese Clothing. Anyone who lived in Point Place could tell you the history of the legendary speakeasy, and criminal activity hidden underneath the facade of the old clothing factory. It was the perfect place to funnel alcohol from Canada into Chicago without getting caught. There wasn’t a kid in town who hadn’t stolen their first beer and drank it in the abandoned warehouse in honor of a time when illegal drinking was celebrated. It was a rite of passage to the teens who lived in Point Place. People claimed they could hear music coming from nowhere, laughter, and the sound of two sharp gunshots. Of course, people were quick to say that if you were drunk off your ass, you were obviously hearing things, but young lovers in Point Place knew better. Because underneath the story of parties, booze waiting to be shipped out, and a whole corner of town belonging to a mysterious mob family, was the legend of two lovers tragically broken apart and a terrible curse. A curse that would defy time until two lovers with the same hearts could break it.
Jackie stood outside the stupid warehouse she had been in countless times on Halloween night, shaking. It wasn’t ghost stories, possible mob ties, or curses that had her shivering in the brisk air. It was the man who drunk off his ass had just told her to “Have a Nice Trip”. She felt tears start to slide down her face as she strode down the block. The warehouse she was muttering her own curses at followed her. It was huge. The part they usually partied in was actually the end by the docks. It occurred to Jackie, they had never once been tempted to explore the rest of the warehouse. As soon as the thought entered her head, a faded red door appeared. Jackie was certain she had never seen the door before, despite walking past the building more times than she could count. Jackie felt the compelling need to step in and get warm. This Halloween wasn’t one of those lucky warm nights you are occasionally gifted with at the end of the season. She pushed in, and for a brief moment, a room decorated with a rich dark green and soft red flashed in her mind. It startled her enough that she wanted to leave what she had seconds ago wanted to explore. Jackie turned on her to heel to find the door stuck. Her heart started to jackhammer in her chest. She pounded on the door, yelling desperately and with pathetic hope that someone from the other side of the warehouse would hear her. It became the least of her worries when she felt a warm whisper on her neck,
Jackie whirled around, back to the door, her hands pressed against the solid wood in fear.
‘Who's there? Steven James Hyde, if this is you messing with me, I’m going to kick your ass.”
Her harsh pleas were unanswered. Jackie’s fight or flight drive kicked into action. If she couldn’t get out this way, there had to be another exit. She started to run across what she thought had to be an old office towards what looked like a solid pine door. In her panic, Jackie didn’t notice the floorboard sticking out, it caught the toe of her clog. She went down, hitting her head sharply. The last thing Jackie heard before she faded into a faint, was
Josephine Calabrese wanted nothing to do with the life that made her daily existence unaffected and elegant. All she wanted was to be with the man she loved, away from the shackles that came with her last name, and to live life without wondering if choices were made for her own benefit, or for the profit of the family. That was why she stood outside her father’s office, ready to beg for what she wanted desperately. With a resolve that came from sheer stubbornness and a heart determined to have her own way, she pushed into her father’s office.
Lucius Calabrese was a man who didn’t suffer fools or disobedience of any kind. This included his children. His wife had long passed away. Gianna had been the best part of him. His heart. His conscience. His reason to keep some part of him from being completely jaded and cruel. Gianna had given him twins. Josephine and Anthony. He kept them close and under his control. He loved his children, of course he did, but in the way he wanted to mold them and set the path he deemed appropriate. It was simply the way things were, until he decided otherwise. Josephine was the spitting image of Gianna, all the way down to her heart. He ached when he looked at her. She was her mother through and through. Anthony was him. Tough, meticulous, clever, and dangerously protective of those he cherished. He was pulled from his thoughts by the patter of delicate feet on the hardwood floor. Lucius sighed heavily, solely by the flare in his daughter’s eyes, he knew trouble was coming.
Josephine took that to mean her father was in an agreeable mood, and skipped to the other side of his desk. She kissed his cheek, and sat in the chair next to his.
Her voice was sweet, but his daughter had the same calculating mind he did. She had her mother’s heart, but his ability to plot and plan. Lucisu was no fool. His daughter wanted something.
Josephine blinked in surprised. “Why do you think I want something?”
“Jospehine”, her father replied harshly. His tone left no doubt he was not in the mood for games.
She squared her shoulders. “Stefano asked me to marry him. I said yes. I love him.”
Josephine watched her father’s face go molten with rage.
“Have you lost your damn mind? In what world do you think I would let you marry a dockworker? I didn't raise you to marry below your family. You’re a Calabrese. That boy is nothing. His presumption that he can have you is unacceptable. For the love of God Josephine, he is fresh off the boat. He barely speaks English.”
Rage flared in Josephine's heart. Without caution, she yelled,
“You can’t tell me who to love. You married Mama for love. You can’t stop me. If I want to marry him, I will. I’ll run away.”
Without hesitation, Lucis grabbed his daughter’s chin, and made his position clear.
“Josephine Anna Calabrese, if you don’t heed me, I will make sure Stefano is permanently removed from your life.”
She knew what her father meant. Her heart curled with black. Josephine ripped his hands away from her face and sneered,
“I hate you. I hate this life.”
With that, she stomped out, determined to follow her heart, even if it meant turning her back on her family.

It was Halloween, and Lucky’s Speakeasy was the place to be. If the cops weren’t on her father’s payroll, there would be no missing the party tonight. Music and laughter were echoing loudly throughout the Warehouse. The whole floor vibrating from the party underneath.Tonight Point Place’s elite was drinking thanks to her father. It was the perfect moment to slip away with the man she loved. She had told only one person her plan. The one person she couldn’t leave behind without saying goodbye. Josephine rushed to her father’s office. It was where she had told Stefano to meet her. As dangerous as it might seem, no one would look for her in a space that was off limits. Her father was engrossed in hosting the party of the year, her absence would hardly be noted. Her heart thumped in her chest as she pushed open the door that only days ago she came through to tell her father her desire. There he stood. Her love. Her heart. Her very soul. Her Stefano.
La mia Giuseppina, his rich voice filled her ears.
My Josephine. He couldn’t be more right. She was his. She belonged to him. Stefano Hyde was her soulmate. He captivated her. He had from the moment he bumped into her while she was waiting for her brother one day at the docks. His eyes were crystal blue, intense, and seemed to see right through her. They had been meeting for months secretly. He had asked her to marry him a week ago. She had said yes without hesitation.
She ran into his arms, and kissed him. His strong arms came around her, holding her tight. His lips warm on hers. Stefano pulled back and framed her face. Josephine was sure she would drown in the depth of love in his gaze.
Before she could respond, a shot rang out in the small room, and Stefano fell heavily to the wooden floor. Josephine dropped to ground next to him, to find blood spreading across his chest. She took no time to find the shooter, her only focus was pulling Stefano’s head onto her lap.
His gaze was rapidly fading away.
“Stay with me. Look at me. Don’t go.”
Stefano grasped her hand tightly and uttered the first word he ever spoke to her in English. A word that had become his nickname for her
To her utter horror, his eyes closed and his body went limp. Josphenice bowed her head and wept; still taking no notice of where the bullet had come from. She didn’t care. If the person who murdered Stefano killed her, she would die a happy woman. Her sobs were interrupted by a firm and cold voice,
“I warned you Josephine. I told you if you didn’t do as you were told, I would stop it permanently. You did this to him.”
Her head snapped up, to find her father holding a gun and her brother next to him. She didn’t even glance at her father. Her rage was all for her twin brother. The person she trusted most had betrayed her.
“You told him, this was you. There was NO WAY he would have come here tonight.”
Anthony Calabrese had faced murderers. His father being one of them. He knew crime. He knew death, some of which he had ordered himself, but the look on his sister’s face stopped him cold. He started to stutter and excuse,
Her Hysterical laugh interrupted him,
“You didn't know he would do something like this?” This is who he is. This is what he does. THIS IS WHAT YOU DO”
Josephine whirled on her father, who had a satisfied smirk on his face. She smacked him fiercely, causing him to drop the gun in surprise, which is exactly what she wanted. Josephine scooped it up, took a big step back from her father, and cocked the still smoking gun. She glared manically at her brother and bitterly spit out,
“I curse you Anthony Calabrese. I curse you to lose the love of your life. I curse you to raise up a family that will lose what is precious until another like Stefano’s finds a heart like mine. I will haunt you until it is so. My soul will scream in yours. You will have power and you will have it now, but it is coming at a terrible price.”
He watched in horror as his sister whirled on their father and shot him. Before he could say a word or do anything to stop the story unfolding in front of him, she gave him her final words,
“May this moment haunt you for all eternity.”
Josephine looked at her brother dead in the eyes as the cries of their father started to fade, cocked the gun and shot herself.
Her curse upon him rang true. Anthony Calabrese would fall in love, lose his wife, watch his daughter shot in front of his eyes, and raise twins of his own, one of which vowed never to love.
He never stopped hearing the shot.

With a huge gasp, Jackie sat straight up in bed, the sound of a shot ringing in her ears. She blinked. Jackie had no idea how she had gotten home, but home she was. She was still dressed in her clothes. The last memory she could grasp was falling in the strange room at the warehouse. A sharp sound came again, causing her to jump. Jackie realized the shot in her sleep was merely the pounding on her apartment door. The continued knocking forced her to get up and face whatever was on the other side. Jackie swung the door open to find Steven. His gaze wild with fear. For a moment his face blended, with features similar but different at the same time. She heard Stefano in her mind as clear as if someone in the room had said it. Her thoughts were wiped away from ghosts of the past by the word she wanted most,
Jackie jumped forward into Steven’s arms and kissed him passionately. Without hesitation, Hyde kissed her back. His heart pounding to life, and for some reason for the briefest of moments, a name popped into his mind,
His brain immediately pushed away what it didn't understand. Hyde wanted to tell Jackie he loved her. That he always had and always would. He wanted to see her eyes light up, and he knew just the way to do it. He would use his most precious name for her. A name he had never been able to explain, a name that had always seemed natural and easy on his lips. A name that sparked a deep love inside of him.
Jackie’s heart settled at hearing him call her Doll. It was like everything was righted, and the hurt from the last few months faded away.
As Jackie and Hyde found themselves in each other’s arms, across town in an old abandoned building, two bright lights burned together until there was only one brilliant beam. Two hearts in the now helped two hearts from across time find each other again.
