Okay, Im so jazzed about this but I want you to know that I was almost finished this post when my browser crashed and I had. to . restart. Anyways, in no particular order here we go!

OKAY! So this is, without a doubt, my most favourite fanfic of ALL TIME, for any pairing, for any fandom, ever. I probably reread this thing every 4-6 months and I cry every single time! It explores alternate realms of the universe that intermingle with our own. It takes star-crossed lovers to another level as it explores loss and love in such a beautiful way. (Also just read all of tothemoon’s makoharu fics because heck, they are all so amazing and hold such a dear place in my heart).

So I just read this and it has quickly become a favourite of mine! I saw this on a fic rec list by @broniichan and wow I was not disappointed. It explores the power of love and loss in such a unique way. The characterization is amazing as well. I finished this entire thing in 2 days because I just couldn’t stop reading!
look both ways: broniichan1 Chapter (complete)TeenSummary:In which Makoto is dead at the same time he is not.
(I’m really becoming aware of my tastes…) This is also about loss and love. On a similar note it falls into the category of alternate timelines and answers a lot of “what if” questions. I cried (as with the previous two) but every word kept me so engaged that I couldn’t stop reading. I think I’ve read this about 6 or 7 times now.
When Haru Met Makoto: Einzel70 Chapters (complete)TeenSummary:Free! UA where Rei was part of the original relay team and Makoto becomes the new fourth member of the Iwatobi Swim Club.
As it says in the summary it explores a world where Haru and Makoto never met until High School. This fic is long but so worth it. Every chapter follows the episodes and explores the changes that would have been present without Makoto and then how Haru grows after meeting him. Their slow burn development is outstanding!!
Dead Reckoning: furiosity24 Chapters (complete)MatureSummary:In which Tachibana Makoto could do with a little less introspection and a little more faith.
To me, this is a MakoHaru classic. Posted during the first season this fic explores the development of Makoto and Haru’s relationship and how the changes of life and university fold into it. It is a soft and lovely fic that I always go back to.
i thee wed: sauntering_down1 Chapter (complete)TeenSummary:“But – I can’t be the bride!” Makoto exclaimed, waving his arms wildly – the ring went flying, bounced off the wall, and landed square in Rin’s laundry basket. “Last time I checked, I wasn’t a girl!”Smiling sweetly, Rin pointed to the door. “There’s a bathroom just across the hall if you want to check again.”Nagisa collapsed into another round of giggles. Makoto was all ready to continue protesting – he was bigger and stronger than Haru, and he was pretty sure that automatically designated him the groom in this wedding – but found himself silenced by the hand that clamped over his mouth. “Three against one,” Haru said, and then replaced his hand with his lips.
This fic will rot your teeth out, it is so sweet! It explores Makoto and Haru’s relationship after young Makoto tells Haru he wants to marry him because Haru is his favourite person. Throughout the years we see how their love changes and develops. This fic also has some really funny parts in it!

This fic is Hot. Hot singer Makoto. Hot band outfits. Hot and desperate Haru. Hot sex. Hot, hot, hot.
The Secret of Drowning: kasuutan1 Chapter (complete)TeenWARNING: self-harm, implied eating disorder Summary:Makoto remains hopeful. Nearly two years have passed, and Makoto thinks that things have returned to normal. Haruka stops showing up at his house in the middle of the night, driven away by his parent’s shouting. Makoto stops seeing the Nanase car driving off into the distance every other week. He thinks, maybe, things are okay again.Or, perhaps, the realistic side of him says, everyone has simply gotten used to the fact that this-whatever this is- is the new normal.Taking place during Haruka and Makoto’s middle school years, Haruka turns to silence while Makoto desperately tries to find answers to things he isn’t told.
This is a sadfic. It is a guilty pleasure of mine for, probably, not the right reasons. It is my destructive fic but also a fic that I read when I need a reminder that it’s okay to feel this way and try to grow.
fish out of water: songbird971 Chapter (complete)TeenSummary: Haruka doesn’t enjoy blind dates. That’s the thing. That’s the problem.
Poor Haru having to deal with RIn. This fic is set in the future fish au and has Good Friend Rin ™ attempt to set Haru up on a blind date with his firefighter friend, Makoto. This is just a sweet and really cute fic!
Eyes Wide Open All the Time: Macbetha32 Chapters (complete)ExplicitWARNING: drug use, drugs, assault Summary:“You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into,” Haru says even as he can see the light at the end of the tunnel.The light is in Makoto’s eyes. “I know you.”In which Haru is a former addict turned dealer, Makoto is a teacher fresh out of the army, and Sousuke is a cop who makes the mistake of helping a rentboy named Rin.
This is a heavy fic with a lot of intense subject. But the plot is so amazing and the characters, the characters! Every chapter left you wanting more and when the next chapter was up that one left you feeling the same way! It is a sad but incredibly satisfying story! It includes all of the Free! characters and makes you fall in love with all of them.
There are so many more but I think these really encompass what my favourite makoharu fics are! (A lot of fics that I love were never completed but I still love them anyways!)
