Aris looked ridiculous sashaying side to side in nothing but a tank top, boxers and socks. He spun around, gaze meeting her’s just briefly. “Come on! Dance with me!”
Sonya couldn’t share in his euphoria. Not tonight. She shook her head, refusing. She did, however, manage to laugh at his antics. It was what he needed. To let go. To feel alive if only for one night.
They were giving them one night together. A gift she didn’t feel too great about. There had to be reason behind it. Minho, another fellow glader, was safe for now, but Sonya wasn’t so sure Teresa’s order of protection covered her or Aris.
Maybe it did cover Aris. He had been traveling with Minho’s group for a while before they were captured, which could mean they were using him to get to her. Another test to get the answers they so desperately needed. Need was such a waste to use with them.
They didn’t do it out of necessity. They did out of greed. At least, that’s what the Right Arm had spoken of time and time again. They couldn’t just make a cure. They had to take it first. They had to steal a whole generation to even get a sliver of information on what the virus’ weakness was. It didn’t sit right with her. It was one of the reasons why her and Harriet had decided to stay with the Right Arm.
The bed dipped beside her, jostling her out of her thoughts. Sonya shook her head again and met Aris’ confused gaze. “Is everything alright?” He asked. “You seem distracted.”
Sonya shrugged, flickering her gaze between his face and the space between them. “Don’t you feel like they’re watching us?” She pointedly eyed the door. “Don’t you feel their eyes on you?” She emphasized, turning back to him.
He was staring at her lips. Eyes filled with a spark she’d never seen before, or maybe because the only time she had seen it from him was when Rachel was around. Her mouth was left hanging open on an unvoiced question. Caught off guard by the sudden awareness that he was scooting closer. She inhaled sharply the moment he laid his head on her shoulder.
Lifting her chin some, Sonya allowed Aris to burrow his face closer to her neck. Her skin tingled at the contact, buzzing with an excitement she had felt once or twice before. Like the day they finally figured out the way to escape from the maze.
“Aris,” she whispered, “what’re you doing?”
He sighed and pressed his lips against the spot where her neck met her shoulder. A rush of heat crawled its way to her cheeks. He kissed her there again. This time opening his mouth some and lightly blowing on the wet spot he left. She shivered, leaning her head back to give him more room.
The next thing she knew, Aris was spread out against the white sheets on his back with her nestled on his hips. “Is this okay?” He murmured against her lips before kissing the air straight out of her lungs.
Sonya nodded wordlessly, giving as much as she was taking. Their hands intertwined on each side of Aris’ head. She never thought… never knew this was possible between the two of them. Rachel had been his everything. Everybody could see it. She saw it for herself the second they had laid eyes on each other.
Aris broke away from her seeking lips, trailing a slew of kisses down her throat. His hands drifted to the bottom of her top and started to pull it up and over her head. Sonya leaned away, helping to get it off along with her makeshift bra. He stopped to study her form, as if saving the sight for later, before surging up to mouth at her chest.
His lips felt heavy underneath her, but the more he kissed, the more weightless she felt. And in that moment of weakness, she decided to fully enjoy herself in their wildly-developing euphoria. Choosing to ignore the stares she knew were penetrating from the other side of their room.
