They can also be destined soul mates if you're cool enough for that. Depending how you interpret it the Prophecy from angel island's mural, they're quite literally fated to met each other. When time gets deleted in generations by the time eater one of the main bosses Sonic has to go back to is chaos. It's a constant of the universe for them to have met. Which is to say for Sonic to have saved Chaos. Because without him he'd be sealed away in the Master emerald again. That was Tikal's idea and it's only because Sonic decided to go against it snd show Chaos some compassion that he ever met peace UGH
Time to cornplate. In forces Sonic seems SPECIFICALLY confused at Chaos attacking him. Well, he's confused by the situation in general. But look at that dialogue.
