Her ability manifested at age 13, in early 2005.

She spent a lot of time out of her home, and with her best friend-girlfriend, Dexter White.

Spent most of her time away from home, it wasn’t even noticed when the government abducted her in 2008. One of five kids, and the rebellious middle child, they just assumed she was pulling a stunt when she was abducted. She has not been in contact with them since.

Her abduction put her in contact with the Rebel network and Micah Sanders.

Full Background:

For the first few years of its existence, Katherine’s ability was sporadic and explosive at best. Sometimes it worked as she wanted it to, and sometimes it did exactly what it wanted to do. It never really clicked with her what was going on with her, until she met her best friend, Dexter White.

The duo found their abilities at close to the same time, and it was an unfortunate to-do that got them stuck in the principal’s office when Dex caused an explosion during their lab hour. It was a rocky start, but the two eventually became friends over the shared weirdness between them- their abilities.

More often than not, Katherine was out of the house, to the point where her family ceased questioning where she was going so long as she didn’t get in trouble. They didn’t have any clue about her ability, other than she had really gotten into pseudo-science. They didn’t question it, chalking it up to a phase that coincided with the eco-punk scene she was falling into. In reality, she was causing enough trouble with her ability that she had been pinged on the government’s radar. Sonokinetic waves breaking government buildings, ruining structures like spikes under overpasses, all traced back to her.

She was picked up on her travels home one day. Flight 195, a big government secret spearheaded by Nathan Petrelli. Out of nowhere, she was tossed in a van, and hooked into the plane. She’s not sure what happened one way or the other, but all she knows is that she was being pulled out and carried along by one of the other passengers. One she finally got into contact with someone, she discovered someone named Rebel helping her and her cohort out of the situation.

Things changed rapidly, and Katherine took a new-ish identity to get out of Chicago and into New York City. She finished school, helped out with Rebel when she was able, and got a degree in political science. She became a professional protester for civil rights of all sorts. Her main focus after she graduated was on Evos’ Rights, which were rapidly being taken.

In 2013, against most odds, she re-connected with some old Rebel members, and more importantly, Dexter. Both had been functioning under the impression that the other was dead or imprisoned since their separation 5 years prior. Since then, the two moved in together, and work on projects together.

She got the Tracker, against her will, and opted in for Micah’s countermeasure. Katherine’s main priority is not being connected, but being out on the streets making a difference however she can. More often than not, she is at Rebel base, and she helps out on the underground railroad a few times a week, granting families and refuges safe passage out of New York City.

Theoretically speaking, and that simply means it could happen but there is no record of it, there comes a point where a decimal can tear open a black hole, so Shay could POTENTIALLY do this, though probably never would in fear of endangering the people she cares about.

Has been kidnapped and tortured before.

Previously married to Robert Wardley.

Is still the VP of Rebel, though it’s a completely underground railroad now. She helps when she can.

Has become more violent and unpredictable over the years.

Isn’t afraid to use her ability, hack into the government, or defend herself.

Full Background:

She discovered her power while practicing in her room one day, working towards a high note in a new solo. It was much higher than anything she had ever tried in her music. As she reached the note she felt her voice change. The timbre of her voice became something other than human and caused her window to shattered. Shay didn’t hesitate to tell her mom about her gift, who was accepting and supportive, but knew that it would be best if they kept her power a secret. It was difficult, but Shay cooperated. They thought they had kept it under wraps until she was recruited by the Petrelli School for Exceptional Individuals.  

Since being at Petrelli, Shay hadn’t exactly minded her own business which caused her to run into some shady dealings involving Robert Wardely. At first, she just thought he was just the intriguing and weird security guard who happened to save her life from her ex. But the nosier and involved Shay got, the farther down the rabbit hole she fell, quickly becoming involved with an organization that basically wanted to destroy the world. That’s when Shay fell in love with Robert.

A short while after falling for him, he too slowly started to realize that he cared a great deal for her too and they ended up sleeping together. A month later, she kidnapped and experimented on. While captured, they not only forced her to learn control over her ability, but they taught her combat skills in hopes to use her as a weapon.

A few months later, Robert finally rescued her and things were pretty great between them. Until the night someone with an illusion ability came to the school looking for revenge. They used everyone’s nightmare’s against them, turning some people against each other, and Shay nearly died at Robert’s hands. Blaming himself for everything had happened since meeting, he left her in search of a way to get rid of his ability so he wouldn’t put her in any more danger. At first, he kept in contact, but after 6 months of not hearing from him, Shay gave up and filed for a divorce. She needed to move on.

After the EHRA was made mandatory, Alan Shelby was killed and that’s when the war between Evos and the government started. Shay didn’t hesitate to go into hiding at first. She practiced her combat skills and tested the limits of her ability. After about a year and a half, Shay finally got back out in the world and started fighting again.

Head Canon: Sonokinesis

Katherine uses her ability through her hands, not her voice. With time, practice, and patience, she could totally use her voice as the channel for her ability, but mostly she uses her hands to change, redirect, or manipulate sound.

It works as the visual equivalent of aerokinesis- most people, aside from synesthetics can't see it unless the sound barrier is broken. Katherine has an innate sense of how sound is traveling, and uses that to control the waves around her.

She can't create sound from her hands, unless she's clapping or snapping, but she can redirect and compress sound into the areas in or between her hands. She can create sound via instruments, and channel sound energy that way.
