souheki and days ranpo feels so terribly alone in the world. fukuzawa’s out on business matters, and yosano is busy with more patients than usual, and ranpo finds the clatter of the agency too much right now. he wanders over to dazai’s desk, for once not able to amuse himself with the way dazai’s not even trying to hide how little work he’s done.

“dazai,” ranpo says, cutting over kunikida’s tangent about how dazai will not be paid if he does not work.

hearing his tone, dazai looks up immediately. “ranpo-san?”

kunikida sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose and muttering under his breath.

“i wanna buy sweets, but the ones i want are across town, and you’re not doing anything anyway so come with me,” ranpo tells him, not even bothering to brighten his voice.

“ranpo-san,” kunikida tries, “dazai needs to—“

“no can do, kunikida-kun!” dazai interjects cheerfully. “what ranpo-san says, goes! now, don’t worry, we’ll bring you back plenty sweets, so don’t be too upset ranpo-san didn’t choose you!”

with that, he hops up, pushing ranpo out the door and ignoring the now-sputtering kunikida. the door closes behind them, and dazai lets ranpo go, instead falling in step with him as they make their way down the stairs.

“i don’t wanna ride the train,” ranpo says after a moment.

dazai hums. “i thought so.”

they walk.

it’s aimless for a while. for ranpo, at least. he watches dazai’s feet, following him, blocking out the sounds of the city. at one point, his hands find themselves fidgeting with his tie. he looks up only when he realizes how much quieter it’s gotten.

dazai’s feet have stopped, and he follows the body up to dazai’s face. dazai smiles softly at him. ranpo shifts his gaze, recognizing the park. he’s had a case in this area before, as he has for much of yokohama, really. it’s a quieter place, set aside from the city. dazai clearly had a destination in mind.

ranpo wanders over, sinking onto one of the swings. it creaks suspiciously, but otherwise holds. it’s old anyway, so nobody really comes here.

dazai sits on the swing beside him, moving steadily back and forth, his feet dragging on the ground.

“what’s on your mind?” he asks, after some time has passed. he sounds conversational, a bit curious, but ranpo knows he’d back off if he had to. so he answers.

“nothing,” he says. “i just— wanted a breath.”

dazai hums. they both know it wasn’t just that.

“i’m honored you came to me,” he says instead.

ranpo snorts. “last resort as always, dazai.”

he tucks his head down, chin to his chest. his eyes rest close. he breathes quietly, controlling the rise and fall of his chest. in and out. in and out. he hears the chains of dazai’s swing stop, hears his feet steady on the wood chips.

ranpo’s arms tuck in, his hands resting on his lap. dazai sighs softly. there’s the sound of dazai slipping off his swing, footsteps making their way towards ranpo. they stop before him and he peeks his eyes open. dazai’s legs are there again, and he takes a moment to suck in a breath. he hadn’t realized how constricted his lungs felt.

“ranpo-san,” dazai says. firmly, this time. like he’s trying to pull ranpo down from his thoughts.

it works, maybe, because ranpo mumbles a shuddery, “dazai.”

dazai crouches and ranpo’s eyes snap to his face, to the sharp, brown eyes. he blinks.

ranpo’s hands quiver, and he reaches out. dazai takes his hands into his own. squeezes gently. they stay like that for a long time. until ranpo’s sure dazai’s legs must be cramping. until ranpo’s lungs no longer hurt to use. until dazai’s lips quirk into a small smile.

“…thanks,” ranpo breathes, eyes flicking away.

dazai stands with much effort, humming something affirmative. “let’s try for no more last resorts,” he decides, pulling out his phone.

“hey,” ranpo huffs, frowning. he wiggles from his seat on the swing, unsteady on his feet.

“nope.” dazai sends off a text to yosano, much to ranpo’s chagrin.

“c’mon,” he says, offering a hand to ranpo.

ranpo scrutinizes him. pouts. takes his hand and starts out the park. dazai laughs lightly.

they walk slowly. dazai takes off his coat one block later, tossing it over ranpo’s head, grinning. ranpo shoots him a glare but makes no move to remove it. the noise around him muffles through the coat.

they arrive still hand-in-hand, arms swinging. ranpo throws dazai his coat back as they clamber up the stairs, not bothering to hurry. it’s late afternoon by now, and they can practically hear kunikida’s stress through the door.

“hmm,” dazai muses, glancing at ranpo. “i don’t quite want to work yet…”

“you never work,” ranpo deadpans. but he flashes him a grin. “count me in. you’re paying.”

“ah, how cruel, ranpo-san,” dazai mourns, smirking right back at him.

they go back downstairs, entering the café instead. work can wait. ranpo needs his sweets now. (and, well, dazai too. he’s earned them).
