INTERNET CENSORSHIP (SOPA)

President Obama nominated Robert Holleyman as deputy US trade representative. If confirmed by the US Senate, Holleyman will help lead the effort to pass the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. Notably, Holleyman is a former lobbyist who led efforts to pass the Stop Online Piracy Act legislation, better known as SOPA, when he was leader of the Business Software Alliance. The SOPA debate (along with its sister legislation, PROTECT-IP, in the Senate) brought a spotlight on industry efforts to undermine Internet freedom through what many considered to be draconian intellectual property policy.

Save the Internet! This is more important than SOPA, it affects all of us! Imagine having to pay more to get premium Internet including Tumblr vs standard Internet without it. Or making some websites slower than others unless users pay more. Encourage your legislators to go against this, rally behind defeating this like we did against SOPA. Let's kill 'em.

((I'm just going to repeat what I said there:

Today, we are seeing a war against the open Internet. We have new versions of SOPA and the TPP and other types of restrictive Internet laws making their way in the political system. Each one seeks to, in their own way, censor the private citizen and sacrifice them in favor of the interests of the large corporation. The ONLY way that this war against the open Internet is going to end is if a Charter of Rights and Freedoms for the Open Internet gets created. This Charter must protect the native architecture of the Internet, the rights of the private citizen, with no exploitable loopholes and be entirely fair for everyone involved. If this doesn't happen, we will lose the open Internet forever.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE AMERICAN TO SIGN IT

If America creates this charter, you won't see another SOPA again.

Since America IS the biggest contributor to the content on the Internet, if there is a fair charter in effect it means that you wouldn't see mass censorship.

Stop SOPA-like policies

This potition is the one we should have been signing. Great we might have stopped that version of SOPA but that doesn't mean another one can't sneak in when we're unaware. This potition stops things like that. We need 100,000 signitures before the 13th April for this to go through guys so start reploging! SOPA is something we fans don't want to happen! Things like GIFS, fan videos, fanfiction and fanart could be taking down if this goes through. Sights like Fanfiction.net, AO3 and possible even Youtube could all be shut down if this goes through. Start spreading the word! SOPA needs to be to stopped!
