It's definitely not about quantity. I'm not convinced it's quality either but I haven't published anything online in over ten years. So to me this feels like an unbelievable milestone! (And I am still freaking out!!!)

Behind the scenes I've written 56,695 words this year on 4 different sterek fics (including the one above) but the idea of actually sharing them (especially in their entirety) has always reduced me to a giant puddle on the floor.

So since this is a new year thing I just want to say an absolutely massive, mega thank you to ALL the moots - each and every single one of you - because to me, you made this possible!

And er. One day. I might actually finish one of the other projects. And when that day comes, thanks to you, I might actually publish them!

Lines between platonic and romantic

(I'm supposed to be napping but I've got some ideas I want to get out my head instead. Reblogs with further thoughts deeply encouraged)

I can only assume the clear lines we're supposed to have between romantic and platonic are because of There Can Only Be One romance ideas. You have to know which behaviours are allowed and which aren't. Of course it varies from person to person (hence the popularity of articles on "microcheating") but people need to feel there's a clear line.

But I don't require there to only be one. A person who is romantically involved with me can be romantically involved with anyone else they like, and now the lines are even more blurred.

And I wonder is there a real need for that line at all? A friend can be someone you may or may not have sex with, a person you may or may not do cute romantic things with. Partner labels are useful to me at least to show a level of commitment and intention, but that doesn't mean just because you live together say and love each other that you want the same romance things. Perhaps your best friend likes loves letters but your boyfriend doesn't. Maybe one of your friends just wants to hold hands all the time. Relationships should take the form that the people in them want them to, not try to fit into a predescribed cultural ideal.

For example one of my exes didn't like tongue kissing, so we never did that, even though we were officially dating. Or with A, though we weren't officially dating, we once spent nearly an hour just lying in each other's arms, smiling at each other, giggling, and kissing each other in a definitely romantic seeming way, but we never defined ourselves as more than friends and with no intention of it being a permanent thing.

The real life advice of this waffle I suppose is love your friends more! Don't do romantic things you don't like just because someone is your romantic partner, do do romantic things with people who aren't your romantic partner if it makes you happy! You can have a partner without romance! You can have a friend with romance! Defy social convention if it makes your heart happy! Affection is natural and human and one of the greatest joys of being alive, so use it with gay abandon! (there's a phrase we should bring back)
