Arppa - Paha meno Pengerkadulla
I've never listened to more than here-and-there singles by Arppa (thank you Spotify algorithm), but now that I'm going to attend a festival he's performing at: I have the perfect excuse to give the artist more of the attention he deserves. So, I started with listening to the album Valeria from 2023, and the song Paha meno Pengerkadulla (Something bad is happening in Pengerkatu) just caught me instantly - both with its rhythm and its lyrics (I mean, at least to the extent I could understand with my basic Finnish knowledge).
For anyone who has ever visited Helsinki, the song is automatically interpreted in a nonsensical satirical way. As far as I could understand, Arppa is referring to the "mundane" things that happen in the area of Sörnäinen, a neighborhood that is often associated with junkies, broken families and homeless people (not as much as in the past, but still). Consequently, it also received the term "Piritori" - Amphetamine Square - in stadi (the Helsinki slang). But above all, I think he touches on a very sad thing and it is domestic violence.
Yläkerrassa kolahtaa Ruusut punaiset lattian maalaa taas Kuka kumma sillä sohvalla makoilee? Oi rakkaus on niin rumaa kun se rakoilee
Translation (the best I can, hahaha):
From the upper floor Red roses are falling again, painting to the ground Who the hell care who sleeps on this sofa? Oh, love is so ugly when it breaks…
I guess we are sometimes afraid to touch such fragile subjects directly. So, eh, at least can sing about them and wrap them in a jazzy beat. It's also a way of increasing awareness, isn't it? 💔
