I do think theres something to be said about the way lighteyes talk about shard vs how darkeyes talk about shards.
Adolin seems to prefer the polished, clean, almost formulated side of shards- duelling. He likes to show off his artistic skill in how he wields his blade.
But, when theyre brought into the battlefield, those "forms" and "techniques" are rarely used. Mostly because, yeah, they dont need them in the face of flesh. Despite the lighteyes talk of stances and glory tied to their shards, when they get into the battlefield they seem less like a skilled swordsman than a brutish, inescapable force of violence.
They swing bodies around like dolls, break entire catapults, crush bones without so much as a sweat. Its a horrifying thing to imagine- impenetrable armor (with the exception of Kaladin Stormblessed, of course) that gives you the power to crush humans, and a sword that can literally mow down crowds. Adolin says it himself, iirc- shardbearers are crowd control.
So much of the view of how lighteyes vs darkeyes view war can be see within just the shards. Lighteyes have a militaristic, nationalist view of war- it is a just, honorable vengeance against enemies for their highprince/alethkar. Darkeyes are just trying to survive.
