I think neither of us writes Solas 100% canonically. The only one who can achieve this is Patrick Weekes, obviously. 

And as long as we don’t write Solas in a way that actually contradicts how he has been portrayed in canon, I think each characterization of fanfic authors is valid. With some of those we might agree more than with others, but as long as we don’t write Solas into a completely different character, we’re not writing him wrong.

Most of the people I know who write Solas put immense thought into their characterization and spend much time observing him - his speech patterns, his body language, his expressions, the things he says and how he says them, what he dissaproves of and what he approves of, what he wears, what he does etc. 

The result is almost always a Solas who is clearly recognizable as the same character Patrick Weekes wrote. 

Of course each of our Solases are different. The way we write him reflects the way we see him, and each of us does interpret him differently - even if some of us by and large hold very similar views on this character.

I wouldn’t say that writing a background for a character does magically turn our characterization invalid and off canon, as long as we base it on things said in canon, as long as it doesn’t contradict canon. 

I wouldn’t say writing a future for a character does magically turn our characterization invalid and off canon either. 

I wouldn’t say filling the gaps with our own imagination does magically turn this character off canon and invalid.

I wouldn’t say writing this character in an AU does turn him invalid and off-canon. Professor!Solas can still be based off the Solas we know from the games. And the same can be true for Solas, who told Lavellan the truth in Crestwood. 

As long as we don’t turn Solas into a madly giggling egomaniac or into a second Edward Cullen who abuses and oppresses his girlfriend Lavellan or turn him into someone who is suddenly cheerful and YOLO, we’re good. 

And we’re valid.

We might not always like the way other people write Solas, because we view him differently than them, but our characterization isn’t wrong, and neither is theirs. 

Our Solases are valid.

So we did the yearbook thing and we could choose pictures and I couldn't find one that screamed 'me' (figuratively. It would be fucking scarry if it really screamed 'me') so I said: " fuck it Imma take some new ones!" and here we are
