Au context:
This AU is vaguely based off of the film “Wolfwalkers”. It takes place in a similar setting- European inspired medieval fantasy
(for this AU I’m thinking more German and English medieval style.)
The society the girls live in is a matriarchal theocracy. Everyone worships the Law of Cycles, which is a concept defined by life, death, and rebirth. (There is no heaven except for those who have been taken by the Law of Cycles itself.)
There is a constant battle to obtain “holiness” as it is known within the elites of the society. Madoka has obtained the highest form of holiness, as it is believed that she is a messiah/prophet of The Law of Cycles.
The theocracy is based like this:: the holier you are, the more respected/well off you are in the society. The less well off you are, the less you are considered holy.
It’s built like a pyramid:
The Unholy (the poor), The Holy (second class), The Divine (first class), The Enlightened (priestesses, bishops, etc.), and finally, The Messiah. (Madoka.) Beyond the hierarchy, there exists The Disgraced and The Witches.
-The Disgraced are those who have turned off of the path of the Goddess and ran away from the kingdom, rejoining with nature/the forest. They are speculated to be powerful magic users, as it is noticed that they have a strong connection to wildlife.
-The Witches are Enlightened ones who have fallen into despair. Since they were already bathed in the light of the Goddess, they have become terrible monsters that reside in pockets of reality that are known as Labyrinths.
How does The Holy Quintet fit in with this story?
As stated before, Madoka bares an uncanny resemblance to The Goddess and has demonstrated the highest form of holiness and faith, thus making everyone persevere her as The Messiah (when she’s literally The Goddess lmao) She is adorned in a lamb-skin coat/hood, as Lambs are sacred in the society.
Homura is a Disgraced. In the first timeline, she used to be Madoka’s right hand woman and the most Enlightened mortal, but after she failed to stop The Rapture after Madoka was killed by the leader of The Witches (Walpurgisnacht), she met an Angel. Since she was in love with Madoka who loved her back, the Angel offers her the ability to go back in time to save her girlfriend in exchange for her holiness.
Homura is adorned in the skin of a wolf and even has wolf-like characteristics. (Ex: sharp teeth, growls, skittish, sharp features, quiet, her hair looks like wolf, etc.) if Lambs are the holiest, Wolves in this AU are Peak unholiness. She really just watches Madoka from afar until they meet face-to face and fall in love all over again.
