Elder Scrolls figures that “haunt the narrative” (not ranked):
1. Indoril Nerevar- Really no explanation is needed. He is the epitome of this trope. Perhaps even against his will, which has remained dead for thousands of years, promise of his prophetic return is regarded in several diverse manners— salvation among the Ashlanders, the prospect of revenge among Azura, respect and solemn regret among the Sixith House, intrigue among the Dissident Priests and Imperial spies, and of course, though they may try to hide behind reverent sainthood, the utter bane of ALMSIVI. However, nobody truly knows what Nerevar himself would want, which only adds to his mystique as the player struggles to navigate their role as incarnate. I also attribute the Nerevarine prophecy as one of the pillars to Morrowind’s many profound themes— to challenge and question zealotry, institutions, strict dogma, authority, and those who would rise to power at the expense of others. But there is also bitter irony in the idyllic “setting things right” portrait Azura painted when you truly sit back and take into account the calamities that followed after the collapse of the Tribunal Temple. Does “the sun’s golden honey” truly gild the post-Red Year land or were we simply manipulated by a successive puppeteer?
2. Martin Septim- Doesn’t fit the typical definition since his physical presence accompanies the HOK throughout the main story, however, I think that can be overlooked given the significance of his character and ambiguous fate coupled with the future political consequences that rippled after his death (and the HOK’s downward spiral as emphasized by popular headcanon). Yes, you the player may have known Martin well, developed an intimate enough relationship with him to differentiate the individual from the grandiose inked line of the history book, but this was not the experience for the common citizens of the Empire. Excluding the Blades and those who fought at Bruma or the final stand, Martin’s deeds and character development, at the interpersonal level, largely remained private— he was loosely known as first a nascent monarch, then suddenly a hero. There are only small reminders of his absence and the tragic finality of it that cement his legacy— They linger in the darkened stained glass from which no Dragonfire is kindled, the tavern rumors, the wilted wreaths that lay beside the dragon statue, and the uncertainty of the nation’s future. Haunting.
3. Lorkhan- Quite literally coined “the missing god” and “corpse god” I would rather say Lorkhan macroscopically haunts Nirn than the “the narrative” because which narrative are we talking about? To the elves, he his spat upon, mocked in Alinor bard songs, and the reason why they believe their ancestors were ripped from their immortal place amongst the stars. Alternatively, he is the centerpiece of mankind’s original pantheon, for they attribute life itself as his gift to them. Similar to Nerevar, the fragmented remnants of his will echos through the symbolic descendants which we know as Shezzarines. I boldly claim that when your freshly severed organ defies your slayer and laughs upon their failed efforts while your corpse orbits the planet, and the thumping of your “doom-drum” heart is the opening of the TES theme song… you are entitled to a bit of haunting…
4. Gallus Desidenius- Perhaps overlooked if you rushed the Theives Guild quest, but I’m a sucker for stories with spousal death. After you meet Karliah, you trace the steps of her dead lover— deciphering his coded journal, slowly unraveling Mercer’s betrayal, and ultimately aiding in the deliverance of revenge. Like many things in Skyrim, it is a simple, but fun tale.
5. Sotha Nall- A bit more niche to those who haven’t played ESO, but one of my favorite touches added to the Clockwork City DLC were the multiple appearances of Sotha Sil’s sister who was killed during Mehrunes Dagon’s destruction of Seht’s hometown. On the outskirts of the Brass Fortress, in a remote garden, there is a plaque and hologram dedicated to her that poignantly reads, “A soul that deserved transcendence. May her song be heard in the hiss of every piston and the sigh of every spring.” Locked away memories of her playfully urging him to sneak out of the house and other sibling banter resonate in the halls of his Mnemonic Planisphere. The automated voices of his factotum machines were sampled with her voice, but occasionally malfunction to recite words synonymous with traumatic descriptions of destruction. Further, the lorebook collection “Truth in Sequence” which are the closest equivalent to Seht’s sermons, attests that while defending Mournhold against Dagon alongside Almalexia, he proclaimed vengeance in the name of his fallen house amidst the battle. Typically regarded as the most emotionally and physically distant member of the Tribunal, it’s beautiful to see these dappled traces of mortal life that in all his ascended glory, he still basks in. From what does this inclination stem from I wonder. Some would say haunting regret.
Am I missing any good ones?
«I stumbled over my words, trying to understand what he was saying. I just repeated myself like an idiot, thinking perhaps that he hadn't heard me. "Marius is dying. We have to get back to him as soon as possible!"
He stood up and pursed his lips before speaking. "I'm sorry," was his only reply.
We stood there in silence for what felt like an eternity. Eventually, I shook my head and whispered, "I don't understand. My body was ruined and you healed me. It's only Marius's heart that needs mending."
Seht approached, placed a brass hand on my shoulder and said, "You misunderstand. It is within my power to heal Marius, but circumstances make it impossible. I grieve with you, Luciana."
I looked up and there were tears in his eyes. I felt a great rage rise up within me. I reached for my hammer, and lifted it above my head just before Seht whispered a banishing word and sent me hurtling back toward the surface».
