A brief reflection on soulmate-AUs and assigned love

I may be the odd one out on tumblr but the concept of soulmates makes me kind of uncomfortable. I’ve seen a lot of AUs where people find their soulmates from some sort of supernatural quirk like a mark on their skin or a special device and it all sounds very nice and easy until you realize that this is a world where your significant other is assigned to you based on very vague criteria along the lines of “most likely to fall in love and be super happy together”. Even if the two people don’t know each other, have never spoken and in some scenarios, actively dislike each other. Through the magic of soulmate-AU, they are now bound for life, eventually work out their differences and fall in love. Much like imprinting in Twilight, which is portrayed as romantic but for many people, borders on dystopian.

On the one hand, I know what drives stories like that. We all want security and stability in our relationships. Falling in love implies lowering your defenses, it means opening up to another human being and that’s scary. A soulmate-AU guarantees you that everything will be okay. It promises you that this one is a keeper, it tells you that you’ll be happy with this person, that the work you’ll put into this relationship will pay off. It’s very comforting in that regard.

On the other hand, it also magically eliminates the need for establishing that communication and working through those potential problems, without the dread that the other person will not reciprocate hanging over you. In a way, it undermines trust which is also the main engine behind love. You see, real trust cannot exist if the other person does not have the chance to break it. And why would they? After all, the soulmate-AU has fitted them together, like pieces of a puzzle. They are soulmates and therefore it would be unreasonable to fight it.

It also eliminates the need to put yourself out there, to talk to that cute guy or girl you like, to establish any kind of connection with another human being that may also be interested in finding a life partner. The system does all that for you. It makes something very complicated like love, frighteningly simple. One day, you’ll find the one even if you do nothing. Not to mention that it also heavily romanticizes arranged marriages and perpetuates the old, archaic notion that we are two halves of one whole and therefore are incomplete on our own. 

For once, I would like to see a soulmate-AU where the designated couple does their best to be together, then they realize they are making each other miserable, break up and move on with their lives. They can remain friends but not a couple. At least not, it any romantic sense. Because the system does not always have the last word and it should never force people together even if it is for their own good.

Review:

What would happen if you found out your soul is not like other souls... that in a world where your past lives impact your future, her's is one of a kind... and she has no soul mate but she has free choice. The premise of this story was initially super interesting... however it kind of all fell apart for me the further along I got into the book. I really wanted to get invested in this story but found myself getting bored. I don't think the way the story was executed actually worked all that well, the flow didn't feel smooth and the protagonist just didn't hook me. I didn't care all that much for the romance and am honestly just happy I made it to the end. This unfortunately missed the mark for me and I just feel like while it was a unique premise, it didn't hit the mark in the end.
