Soulstruck by Natasha Sinel
Oh boy. This book took me a good... three(ish) weeks to get through. Yeah. BUT TO BE FAIR it may not have been the book’s fault. For all of us university/college goers April is finals month soooooooo yeah that was definitely a contributor to the amount of time it took me to drag myself through Soulstruck. Well... actually I did read 26 books over the month so maybe I am wrong in making the whole exam-stress-at-fault assessment. Maybe the book just really sucked (in my opinion).
So I was waiting the full book for something supernatural (or magical realism-y) to happen because the synopsis kind of implies that? With the whole lightning strike = seeing soulmates thing? Or you know... the soulmate thing in general? And I was left hanging? IDK maybe I was out of it while reading the synopsis and went in expecting something that was never promised in the first place.
However, that wasn’t what I had a problem with. Main character Rachel was my problem. She spends the entire book whining about how “unloved” she is despite having a loving mother and pseudo-family courtesy of her mother’s lightning strike survivor support group. And yeah, I get that her main issue was feeling like an outside (and trust me when I say I know better that anyone what that feels like) in her own home, but she went as far as being jealous of/hating her best friend for nearly dying by lightning.
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL. Her main love interest for the duration of the book is another best friend named Jay who has Asperger syndrome (AS) which is an autism spectrum disorder (for those of you who are unsure). AS has many characteristics, one of the best known being difficulty with social interactions. So when Jay gets uncomfortable and overwhelmed with Rachel’s relentless affections (mostly her wanting to kiss and touch) and expresses this, Rachel has the nerve to get annoyed and becomes angry at him for something that he cannot help. So yeah, did not appreciate that particular brand of blatant disrespect. I hope it’s just the character who’s the asshole and not the author.
Oh also the sex scene was so cringe-worthy. It seems like Sinel was afraid of the word orgasm and referred to orgasms as “getting there”. Like for fuck’s sake just say orgasm. It’s not a bad word. Repeat after me: Orgasm, orgasm, oooorrrrrGGGGAAAAASSSSSMMMMMMM! Just saying.
Sinel does try to redeem Rachel... in the last two chapters. Let me just say - too little too late. By that time I was aggravated with everything about this book and couldn’t care less about what happened in the end.
Final verdict: two out of five stars.

Seventeen-year-old Rachel Ferguson is trying to get struck by lightning. Hopefully it will lead to finding her soul mate, like it did for her mother. And then maybe her mom will be as devoted to her as she is to her lightning strike survivors group. When Rachel discovers a journal written by her mother's soul mate - the man she thought was her father - she begins to question everything she's always believed, including soul mates, fate, and even her mother. No longer sure of its power, she decides to quit chasing lightning. Rachel feels abandoned and alone. Her best friend has ditched her, her boyfriend has dumped her, and a confrontation with her mom only made things worse. At least she still has her friend Jay. In fact, their growing attraction to each other seems to be the only good thing happening. But when her relationship with Jay starts to unravel, too, the impulse to get struck by lightning resurfaces. And there's a thunderstorm coming. Set in a small Cape Cod beach town in the off-season, Soulstruck is about the search for love and the risk of losing it while waiting for destiny to happen
