It’s been a long time since Erik walked the halls of the Academy on Helix Station, orbiting the Class Five planet of Earth II. His memories are fond - of both the place and the people – of a time when he was an orphan with a chip on his shoulder and a yearning to chart the stars. And though his friends scattered long ago to different posts across the galaxy, he’s never forgotten how they helped him through those difficult years, becoming the family he’d lost after the invasion of his home planet Edmos.
Pausing outside the Chancellor’s office, Erik takes a slow and calming breath, smoothing the lines of his dress uniform in anticipation. Though he’s not here in an official capacity, he’s still eager to impress the man seated just beyond the closed door. So much time has passed since they went their separate ways, having been assigned to different ships within the Fleet immediately after graduation. Charles’ aptitude for sciences led him to a posting on the Alliance’s most prestigious research vessel, while Erik set off to join the ranks of the Marine Corps. Their paths have crossed infrequently over the course of twenty years, their relationship remaining within the bounds of a profound friendship, no matter how he felt – how he still feels – about his best and oldest friend.
“Come in.”
The office is huge – befitting the Chancellor of the Alliance Academy – yet distinctively Charles in a way that makes Erik smile. It reminds him of the quarters they once shared as cadets, filled with textbooks and mementos collected from a hundred different planetary systems. And unlike other officers who might show off their medals and awards, Charles’ numerous accolades are nowhere to be seen, with only one thing prominently displayed in glass on his desk: a miniature of the AF-01 Genosha, the flagship of the Alliance Fleet under Erik’s command.
“Erik!” Charles says, grinning widely as he steps forward to embrace him. Unlike the last time they met, Charles is sporting new cybernetic legs in lieu of his hover chair, which would be imperceptible under his tailored uniform if not for Erik’s metal sense. “Or should I say, Admiral Lehnsherr.”
Rolling his eyes, Erik returns the hug and snorts, “Yes, so lovely to see you again, Chancellor Xavier.”
Laughing, Charles drags him into the office and pushes him into a chair, staring at Erik the entire time like he can’t believe he’s actually there. Erik happily returns the favor, noting the new silver at his temples and the crinkles around his eyes, older but no less beautiful than when they first met at the ripe age of seventeen.
“Alright, I’ll lay off with the title if you tell me what you’re doing here,” Charles asks, making his way over to the tiny kitchenette to turn on the coffee maker. “Aren’t you supposed to be reporting in for duty at Alliance Headquarters? Or did you stop in to see the twins before you headed planet side?”
“I did stop in to see them, but that’s not why I’m here,” he says, thinking about the dinner they just had together where Erik had told them his plans. “How are they doing with their classes?”
Charles beams. “At the risk of sounding biased…they’re doing marvellously well. Wanda has a real interest and aptitude for diplomacy, and I think Pietro is determined to follow in your footsteps.”
“That’s good to hear. Their mother will be pleased.”
“Oh, she was,” Charles says with an impish grin, “I just had lunch with Magda the other day when she came for a visit.”
With Magda living on Earth II and its proximity to Helix Station, it’s no wonder that the two have become fast friends since the twins enrolled in the Academy. Erik would be more concerned if he’d ever had anything but a fleeting romance with the twins’ mother, who had jokingly told him once that she preferred Charles’ boyish charms to Erik’s sexy broodiness by far.
Erik shakes his head. “I really don’t want to know what you two said about me behind my back. And I came here to see you, Charles, to ask you to dinner.”
Charles hands him the coffee – Erik’s favorite blend, which is hard to keep well stocked on his ship – with a smile. “Of course, we can have dinner. I don’t have any other appointments for the rest of the day. Why don’t I take off a bit early and we can grab a bite in the cantina?”
“Actually…I was thinking we could go to a nice little bistro I heard about planet side, not too far from HQ. I have a personal transport that can take us there in half the time it takes riding the public shuttle, which gets us there in plenty of time to sample the Chef’s famous chocolate soufflé.”
Still smiling, Charles takes a sip from his cup and leans back against his desk. “Careful Admiral. You’re making it sound like you’re asking me out for a date.”
“I am. Asking you out,” Erik says, watching intently as Charles’ expression shifts from teasing to surprise then to a soft, warm smile. “Since we’re finally going to be in the same solar system again, I just thought – maybe now’s a good time to tell Charles how I feel about him before another twenty years goes by?”
It’s everything and nothing like what Erik’s always imagined, when Charles leans forward to press their lips together in a sweet and tender kiss. “Of course, I’ll go out with you on a date,” he says, those blue eyes twinkling when he adds, “I mean, now that you’ve finally made Admiral, Erik, and I can show you off to all my snooty friends.”
Erik doesn’t bother to answer him, choosing to kiss him senseless instead.

AU-gust Day 10: Space Academy
Will Graham laid back in his bed and sighed, rubbing his eyes as the alarm continued to blare.
“Shit,” he groaned, “Abigail, alarm off.”
A voice echoed in the room. “Alarm off. Good morning, Will.”
“Good morning, Abigail.”
He got up, dragging his feet to the refresher and got under the quick spray. It wasn’t much of a morning cleanse, but it was enough, and he quickly got dressed to join the other students in the main area.
Will was in his third year at Wolf Trap Space Academy, training in mind therapy and extraterrestrial interaction. He hadn’t been too thrilled at either major but upon his mind sweep that was what was chosen.
Mostly because Will, of all two hundred current students at the academy, was the only one who could read minds.
His father had always kept Will from telling people his gifts, mostly out of fear, but the mind sweep at least picked up on parts of it. They hadn’t come and dragged him off for any sort of ‘testing’ like his father warned him of when he applied to the academy out of school, but still the fear made it easier to just steer clear of his fellow students.
It was lonely, the past two years, with no one to talk with, but he managed.
Will walked into the main area and a few people stared but no one offered him a seat so he sat in the front with no one else nearby.
Captain Jack Crawford was coming to speak today, and there were rumors that he was even thinking about taking on young recruits for a one time mission. Will was eager to get away, not having to hide as much, but he didn’t expect to be chosen.
Which was why, after Captain Crawford’s speech about ‘reaching the skies’ and ‘helping bring the universe together’ Will was surprised when he ended up being asked to stay behind with about ten more students.
Beverly Katz was one, she worked in medical technology with her close friends Brian Zeller and Jimmy Price. Also asked to stay was Matthew Brown, who was a communications major and biological interpretation but Will thought that was only because he could talk his way out of anything and was a little too interested in the human body.
They were all given tests, one page, and the questions were odd.
If you were given the opportunity to cohabit with an alien lifeform would you:
Say no
Use them for your own devices
Teach them how to exist on Earth
There were plenty of aliens at the academy, mostly half human from parents who found love on space missions with alien lifeforms. Will wasn’t sure what this was about but he answered honestly.
Aliens had never scared him.
It is the last night before assignments go out. Tomorrow, the cadets will be officers, proudly bearing the colors of their division, beaming off to ships and starbases across the galaxy.
However, for tonight they’re still in the cadet barracks. The underclassmen’s quarters are quiet as they frantically prepare for their final exams. The upperclassmen’s exams are over, pass or fail. This is their last night together, free of rank and the duties it brings and they relish it. All order has been forgotten, any attempt to keep the peace abandoned.
Music booms down the hallway, mingling with shouts and laughter. Most of the doors along it are open, and cadets run and jump, and dance between them, drinks or friends, or both in hand, and inside things are even more chaotic. It’s a giant party, and the whole graduating class is invited.
Not that everyone showed up. Behind some closed doors, quiet students - some human, some alien - try to catch some sleep before the big day to varying success. Others hold more intimate gatherings with close friends, extending their tearful goodbyes through the night, laughing and reminiscing, and some goodbyes are more intimate still.
Behind one door, a couple of young women shriek with laughter as they bombard each other with regulation pillows, their beds exploded into a pillowfort across the floor—a celebration of true friendship. They tussle, rolling over the blankets with easy abandon, only coming to a stop before they run into a bed, lying with one nearly on top of the other.
Laughter slowly fades into fits of giggles, though wide, bittersweet grins remain.
“I can’t believe it’s almost time,” one says.
“Just a few hours,” the other replies, biting back laughter. “I am really going to miss you.”
“Me too.”
There is a tentative pause as their eyes meet, really meet, and then they both close the distance for a kiss.
