Jewel from 2019
Which of my 'raised-in-the-90s' mutuals are ready to get flashbanged in the memories by a kid's sci-fi show they barely remember?
Yeah, that's right, it's Space Cases! Also known as Star Trek: Voyager for Middle-Schoolers! Nickleodeon's long-lost live action sci-fi kid's show. It had all the charm, sincerity, and action of Star Trek TOS, and probably the same shoestring budget. I loved this show.
It aired on The Family Channel in Canada and I have to assume we got a different opening theme for the first season than anyone who saw it on Nickelodeon in the states. Season 1 had this boring narration that summarized the plot when I watched it, while season 2 had a song that did the same thing. But whenever I rewatched the show online, it had the song for season 1, which also made me realize they rewrote it for season 2 to keep relevant to the plot.
Anyway, it's a fun little show that you might enjoy if you like low-budget sci-fi and don't mind that it's written for kids. As a bonus, you'll also get to experience what TV looked like in the 90s, because the only version of Space Cases that exists online looks like it was uploaded from recorded VCR tapes.
Hello! Merry Christmas and happy hugs! Can you please draw Catalina and Suzee in the same dimension having a sisterly hug? Thank you! :D
I love that idea! I can't believe I haven't drawn this scene before now. It really suffers for lack of color for these two characters, maybe we'll do this prompt again in the future...

The first sci-fi thing I ever liked was Space Cases on Nickelodeon back in 1996.
Then I discovered Lost in Space in '98 thanks to the Sci-Fi Channel rerunning tos due to the recent movie.
After that, I found Star Wars, and the rest is history.
Imagine my surprise when I found out later in life that LiS's own Will Robinson, Bill Mumy, was one of the main creators of Space Cases and that he and Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill, are best friends and cameoed in a Space Cases episode together as two silver aliens with Liverpool accents.
Sometimes, things come full circle in life, ya know.
Oh, also, there probably wouldn't be Prodigy or Skeleton Crew without SC.
One year later:
TIL from this Keith DeCandido review that this teddy bear's appearance in Space Cases was written by Peter David in order to get back at J. Michael Straczynski for having Sheridan space the teddy bear that David had gotten JMS as a gift.
