Fallen Oak

They both knew this was something different; this was the first time she had called the power to her rather than it just appearing. Freyja sighed deeply and through the shard into the fire. It popped and hissed and was consumed in a ball of green flame.

His face was smeared with ashes, his clothing shredded to ribbons, and his feet looked like swollen black stumps. He stumbled into the throne room like a prophet seized with a vision, stammering madly and taking great lurching steps towards Aisling.

Funny enough, these are both the ONLY instance of either word.

Space Invalids

The Screecher gave its name-sake cry as it pulled itself up onto its stumpy feet and prowled forward with the gait of drunk toddler. It may not have been able to see them, but it had felt their body heat and knew it was being cheated of a meal.

Ghost and Spectre

I heard a groan come from behind it, and part of me immediately wanted to bolt over to Spectre like she had told me. But I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even stop her; I could only watch as she walked and her steps seemed to leave little cracks in the pavement.

“Suit yourself—we all die anyway. Makes no difference to me how you choose to do it.” There was a cold certainty to Merlin’s voice, one I had never heard and never would have thought possible coming from my kid brother. But his tone was steel, and that coupled with the rough shape Spectre seemed to be in chilled me.

And it only took my forever to do this, soooooooo let’s tag ya’ll with the word lazy and slow:

Let’s pick the two non-main WIPs, since you all have access to the seventh page of Ghost and Spectre in the first chapter here. 

Fallen Oak

“No, Freyja, I could never ask it of you—“

 “I’m offering, my lady!”

 “—and I’m refusing,” Aislingsaid with finality, a funny echo ringing in her ears as she sliced the blade cleanly through her skin. Blood bubbled up immediately, and with her good arm, she pulled back the heavy blanket and let the deep red liquid drip onto the pristine white sheets. When Aisling was satisfied it was enough, she returned to the fire place and allowed Freyja to bandage her while she toasted cheese with her good hand.

Knees under her chin, she took up maybe less than two square feet of space, and only a few stray strands of hair would have been visible to the outside world. And still the boots stopped, directly in front of her hide place, and the ratty cloth under which she was hidden was pulled away.

She kicked at the stranger’s face, but his hand easily caught her small foot. She twisted away, struggling to get herself upright but knowing there was nowhere to go if she did. So she simply stood up, peering back the man face. Os felt herself shiver as she looked up at him, the warm browns of his skin almost identical in colour to the dark bronze of the metal arm that held her make-shift blanket. He looked at her too, but it was a different kind of look. He did not dwell on the unusual slope of her upper torso as much as he seemed to count the number of ribs visible under the tattered toga-like shirt she had tied with her teeth.

“What is your name?” he asked, speaking low and soft as though she were a frightened animal.

Omg, @raiswanson, bless you for bringing this one back. I will carry on your sci-fi theme and do it for my NaNo project.

“It’s a piece of absolute Screecher piss is what it is. The hell kind of plot heroicizes pirates? You know how hard I worked to steal my stuff from hoenst people, just for them to show up with an EMP and swipe the entire haul? I ever meet this author, they’re gonna end up an entree.”

“OOOOOH! IT IS A MOST MARVELOUS TALE OF ADVENTURE AND FRIENDSHIP. THERE ARE MANY WONDERFUL PEOPLE-- OS-FRIEND SHOULD PERHAPS BE MORE CAREFUL IN THE FUTURE, SHE IS QUITE SMALL AND SHOUTY. BUT WE WILL ALWAYS BE THERE TO HELP HER.”

It is, however, not the authors fault that her feeble mind could not compute such errors. It the nature of humans to err--and my burden to correct.”

The Naughty List Tag

I think I did something like this for Ghost and Spectre, so let’s use my NaNo Projects Space Invalids instead for this one. 

THE RULES:

1) Provide a brief description of your novel before beginning. NO MORE THAN 5 SENTENCES.

Os knows the only law on Megalytire is this: survive, whatever it takes. She intends to do just that. But her connections to a mysterious cyborg quickly pit her up against the mafia, smugglers, pirates, and an eternities-old secret society all hunting the same thing: a scientist who may have found a way off-planet. 

2) If your cast is fewer than 15 characters, you can’t use the same name more than twice. If your cast is larger than 15 characters, you can’t use the same name more than once.

THE QUESTIONS:

#1 Which character is SO into the holidays, they nearly cause a street-wide power outage from all their Christmas lights?

Omg, absolutely Pitar. He would get so excited he’d decorate the entire ship from top to bottom with lights and commit himself to learning to cook food that is edible to humans and use up so much energy running the ovens 24/7 in an attempt to not burn the cookies. 

#2 Which character attends the office new years party with ONE date…and goes home with someone else?

Absolutely Captain Nemo. They’re here for a good time, not a long time. 

#3 Which character is more than happy to steal Hanukkah gelt from poor, unsuspecting children? [Note: Hanukkah gelt = chocolate coins]

A’dicc. He considers it his duty to spread misery, quite frankly. 

#4 Fill in the blanks: I saw ____[character]____ doing a whole lot more than ____[verb]____-ing Santa Claus. They were full on ____[action]____.

I saw A.X.I.A doing a whole lot more than talking to Santa Claus. They were full on questioning how he got on board and whether or not he had all his shots and eventually just threw him in the brig after going into full lock-down. . .so no Christmas this year, I guess. 

#5 One of your characters decides to pregame before church and passes out in the middle of the Christmas service. Which character is it?

Oooooh, apparently Anya (literally learning this about her as I write it). She has neither the patience for organized religion (some bad past experiences) nor the self-control to keep her mouth shut if she remains sober. For the sake of peace in the church, Anya dutifully drinks herself into a stupor. 

#6 Which character hasn’t been seen since winter began because they refuse to deal with the snow?

Listen, after growing up in an artificial paradise of eternal summer, Puck isn’t suggesting that snow is the worst thing about the surface world, but he would suggest it’s pretty much an abomination sent as a curse to his people. 

#7 Which character completely forgot about the holidays and ends up regifting to everyone?

Thomas. No one told him that these celebrations happened, but damn it, if he isn’t going to make sure absolutely everyone gets something and write obscenely sweet notes to go with each gift. 

#8 Which character has such crappy luck, they only discover their potato allergy after pigging out on latkes?

A’naas. He has too much faith in Pitar’s cooking, and Pitar didn’t bother remembering that maybe while making things that were edible for humans he should have been concerned about the xeno-digestive systems at play here. 

#9 The Krampus has arrived to punish your very bad characters. Which character is kinda into it?

I feel like this is Nemo again. Actually, they probably full on shape-shifted into Krampus and it’s the crew who’s totally into it. All consensual, of course ;) 

#10 One of your characters should be on the naughty list, but has convinced Santa to clear their name. Which character is it, and what was their means of persuasion?

Os. She just stares him down in all of her five-foot glory, and intimidates him into giving her presents.
