Hi! It's Worldbuilding Wednesday!

I love sci-fi so I'm curious about the world of Galaxy Destroyer - what's the transportation like in that world? How long do journeys take, what kind of technology is used for travel?

Happy WBW (on a Thursday because time is relative :D)!

I'm still trying to develop that WIP more hehe- but here's what I have so far on transport:

they do have lightspeed BUT it burns a ton of fuel crazy fast so everyone uses that function sparingly

as the result, the ships usually just fly through space at their normal speed so journeys can take a while depending on the ship's average speed

the ships are very complicated and most mechanics know a ton about how the ships work and little cheats to conserve fuel while not sacrificing speed (they're not very efficient though)

fuel is expensive because PIE (Peace Intergalactic Expansion, the pretentious assholes that want to micromanage everything) have a monopoly on it and charge crazy high prices

however, if you have enough guts, the black market does have smuggled and stolen fuel as well as ship parts for cheaper (the products are usually good, but getting them is dangerous af)

𝑭𝑶𝑹 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑩𝑰𝑹𝑫𝑺 — an introduction

We do not judge this Birdie because she does not know any better, as we all have experienced.  We do not judge this Birdie because she is remembering.  We do not judge this Birdie because the world is ending.  We do not judge this Birdie because she is changing.

GENRE — coming-of-age, campy queer horror and 20th century historical fiction.

THEMES — queer identity, consumption as it pertains to love, late-stage capitalism, and desire, queer longing, and cannibalism as metaphor

WARNINGS — graphic imagery, death, drug use, and depictions of mental illness (including suicidal ideation). This project also heavily deals with homophobia and transphobia and the depictions included may be triggering for some readers.

POV — a shifting perspective ranging from scenes told in the first person to ones with an omniscient third person

INSPIRATIONS — susan sontag's notes on camp, 1980s/90s LGBTQ+ history, punk subbaculture, spike lee's do the right thing, reality bites, car button cloth by the lemonheads, luc guadanino's bones and all.

STATUS — first part has been written, though in need of a rework; focusing on developing the characters and themes.

𝚂 𝚈 𝙽 𝙾 𝙿 𝚂 𝙸 𝚂 —

Birdie Gish-Sato wakes up in 2023 with the fuzzy logic that she ate someone and a bullet in her mouth. In 1993, she runs into trouble with the law on the night of her band Toilet Bowl's third night on tour. Feeling as though the world is ending quietly, 2023 Birdie goes about her day as normal as she pieces together who she ate. An omniscient and mysterious set of voices known as The Birds navigates us between the thirty years that separate these twin tales. They will show us who Birdie ate, why, and ultimately explores what gnaws at everyone's bile and stomach acid and causes them to want to eat.

𝙲 𝙰 𝚂 𝚃 —

BIRDIE GISH-SATO — portrayed by miki berenyi of lush. A fire-engine haired phoenix of the 1990s. A drummer in a shitty band called Toilet Bowl, the best McDonald's Employee of the Month, proud member of the NYC queer scene, and overall asshole.

SANTO GALLITO — portrayed by benicio del toro. Forty-six miles from the last rest stop, SANTO cries in the bathroom. He has a wooden key in hand as he sniffles on the toilet seat. He's left home to be a man, to make something of himself, and to finally find some peace of mind. Set in 1993 or 2023, Santo is a trans Puerto Riccan living in Detroit, working at Kroger in the metro area as a cashier.

RONNIE VOLKOV — portrayed by angelina jolie. A hell-raiser who makes goosebumps as she walks past, VERONIKA VOLKOV has been a prima ballerina, a murderer, an addict, and a (aspiring) rockstar. She chose RONNIE as a name when she turned twenty-one and manifested her destiny much the way her mother did when they first came to America.

JUPITER TUCKIR — portrayed by al pacino. JUPITER TUCKER is a scoundrel garbage man, former muse, former artist, failed gifted child, and failed lawyer. He has just robbed a grocery store, is coming off a manic episode, and drove his mother's truck off the side of a cliff.

JOSIE ABERNATHY — portrayed by drew barrymore. A sweet young thing and shift lead at the McDonald's Birdie works at. In 2023, she's an it-girl influencer who reads fanfiction at the drive-thru window, and in 1993, she's in over her head, a smidge addicted to cocaine, and trying to 'get her shit together.' In either plot line, Birdie loves her.

WIP INTRO - Holiday in Salubria

Status: outlining/creating characters/drafting

Setting: multiple planets in a distant future with mega-cities and living starships alongside hostile nature

POV: 1st person present

Themes: ancient civilizations fading | vaguely supernatural biotech | family bonds | falling from grace | falling back in love | facing trauma | sacrifices made for love | breaking away from the past | revenge | survival | rising up to those in power

*Warnings: violence, blood, mental health issues

Summary:

Quin was once an ordinary girl. As a child, she was conscripted by the Gallanthian empire, implanted with a rare armor seed, and told she was destined to become an agent of the empire’s mysterious rulers. On the same day, she met her mentor, Maddox, for the first time.

That was eight years ago. Now, Quin’s first orders to accompany him on a real mission have arrived. Behind a mask of pride, she can tell Maddox is deeply troubled. They are to investigate reports of bizarre sightings on another world–humanoid monstrosities in the Salubrian wilderness, remnants of some long-forgotten war.

Quin and Maddox aren’t the only ones assigned to the case. While they team up with Maddox’s estranged friend, Ash, they are unaware of another party preparing to undertake the journey with more sinister intent.

Welcome to the rekindling of my sci-fi wip! It’s been a wild road to get here after months of burnout but I’m starting to get that creative itch, finally.

So this new project will be…different. A lot will stay in place–the cast you’ve met, the worldbuilding generally–but there will be more characters with bigger arcs and lots of plot changes. Quin will still be the main POV. There will be a few parts in Maddox and Ash’s POV and possibly others!

I’m going to try to be more forthcoming with my process this time so expect rambles, sketches, graphics, and the odd playlist or two

           ↠ introducing a new time travel sci-fi wip by camilla !!

     ‘You’re talking nonsense,’ I say. ‘Complete and utter nonsense.’      He sighs dramatically, throwing his hands up in the air. ‘No, no, Amarantha, you misunderstand entirely. You’re thinking of time as linear, when I promise you it is anything but. Minutes, hours, days. It’s all just humanity’s way of making sense of their existence, their way of giving names to the forces of the universe they cannot hope to ever truly understand. The type of travel I speak of is not nearly as outlandish as you think.’      I shake my head. This man is clearly delusional.      ‘Let me put it that way for you.’ He sits down opposite me, clasping his hands together and resting them on the smooth wood of the desk. The air feels very still, almost suffocating. His eyes shine with an almost terrifying energy. ‘What if I told you,’ he says in a lowered voice, ‘that everything - the past, the present, the future - is all happening at once? That it’s not so much knowing when to go, but where.’ 

     Amarantha is offered an opportunity few are ever chosen for - the chance become a member of the secret society hidden within the walls of the Natural History Museum in inner-city London. With them, she will travel to times and places never seen by humankind before, see the history of the Earth before her eyes. She will no longer be Amarantha, your average university student struggling to make ends meet. She will be a fox.      There is more to the society than meets the eye, though. As Amarantha will soon discover, lost in the dangerous valleys and forests of a prehistoric age, her worth to the organisation she serves relies on her obedience. And Amarantha has never been one for doing as she’s told, especially if it involves sentencing another person to death. Trapped in the dark wonderland of the past and hunted by some of the most powerful forces in the world’s history, she will have to learn to survive against the odds if she can have any hope of returning home.

Out of Context Line Tag

Thanks @notwritinganyflufftoday for tagging me in this. So here's a very out of context snippet from way later in the Sci-fi wip series:

They needed Ritnin alive to squeeze every last drop of information out of him, and it was clear that Malya was on a suicide mission.

Finally posted a snippet, and neither of my main characters are in it, oops. I don't know many people, but I'll tag @acethetic-lizzy for an out of context line snippet!
