ha. hahaha. i've been possessed by the spirit of angst demons or something, and wrote over 2k for the torment nexus today. i'm saving most of that for a snippet share at some point this week probably, but here's a bit where i went back to pick up where this snippet ended; caveat that i actually changed the caller to Athena instead of Chim.
The temptation to ignore the phone call is immense. It will almost certainly be about Evan, and Tommy doesn’t have it in him to pretend to be even halfway normal through a conversation about Evan.
But. Well. It will almost certainly be about Evan. And now that Evan is gone, he can’t bear the thought of missing even the smallest thing related to him. Whatever pieces of Evan are still out there now, are all there will ever be.
It still takes his shaking fingers several tries to accept the call. When he finally answers, his voice snags hoarse and heavy in his throat. “Athena?”
“Tommy!” shouts an impossible voice.
Today's rec is a truly delightful Cap!Steve/Modern!Bucky with an extra side of doggy goodness. This story has fake dating (for the most tenuous of reasons, as is tradition), a Steve who isn't really okay and a Bucky who wants to do something about it. And dogs, did I mention the dogs? I really like the dogs in this one.

Sometimes you just want muscles and sweat. Below are my Top 5 Favorite Stories:
“Howitzer” (E, 111k) by spacebuck
Bucky Barnes, figure skating champion, is forced to switch his skates for hockey ones when he leaves for college. Problem is, he's never played hockey before, and now he has to be good enough to get the scholarship he needs. Enter Steve Rogers, Carter University Men's Hockey player, who's decided that he'd do anything to get this guy on his team.
Cue five am runs, overwhelming classes, new friends, plenty of snow, and a sport that's fast becoming a way of life.

“Moosebumps” (T, 4k) by rohkeutta
Steve feels like he’s in some wild fever dream as he walks closer and says, “Hey, you all right?”
107 looks up. He looks even prettier up close, even (or especially, Steve’s mind supplies unhelpfully) with his cheeks flushed with the exercise and sweat beading on his forehead. He does look a little crazy, though.
“Huh,” 107 says, looks down Steve’s body, then up again. “I know we just met, but your dick looks like it’s getting strangled.”
+ Modern AU. Cyclists, Bucky holds a grudge and Steve is enamored

“Dodging the Question” (T, 6k) by Deisderium
Steve Rogers knows that he's in a recreational league, intellectually. Emotionally, he wants to completely destroy the other team. It's stupid, and when he's not actually in the middle of the game, he can admit that to himself and to others. But while he's playing, all he can focus on is completely ruining his opponents.
This is true no matter what game he's playing. It's true during basketball season, it's true in singles tennis, and it is certainly fucking true when it's time for summer dodgeball.
+ Modern AU. Dodgeball, Steve is incredibly thirsty

“The Baisodrome Theory” (T, 8k) by Niitza
Rumors abound about the Olympic Village. Some say it's like a college campus, only worse because it's abroad and almost everyone is of legal age. Some say it should be re-baptized Fuck City. Some say it's unsanitary and not up to security standards and refuse to move in (we're looking at you, Australia).
Bucky doesn't care. Unlike some people (read: Clint), he's not here to relive his not-so-long-lost youth or to entertain his dick. He's here for the sport. He's here for his teammates, for his family and for the guys back home. He's here to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience: the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Nothing more.
Too bad life rarely gives you what you want—or actually expect.

"Maybe the Real Gold Medal Was the Friends We Made Along the Way” (E, 18k) by thedishandthespoon
Steve is at his first Olympic games and he's determined to prove himself. Bucky is at his last Olympic games and trying not to think about his retirement. They meet. Steve gets to call Bucky "Sir." It's nice.
+ Modern AU. Olympic AU. Steve is adorable and thirsty as hell. Age difference, just the tip, and happy endings
