I'm a senior in high school (with a 504 plan) and at my school we have to do senior projects. My senior project is basically trying to create a FAQ of "How to Transition to College with a Learning Disability" page for my school's disability resources page. So far I've mostly been doing research (praise google). It seems that every College/University has a different way of dealing with stuff. I was wondering if you have found any good resources on the topic (just from your experience)?
Oh dang, buckle up, doll, because this will be a long ride.
I actually only got diagnosed about a year ago, when I was already a year into college, and wondering why normal “college study tips” didn’t work for me.
Once I got my diagnosis, I was so relieved and excited to try to find really good resources for autistic college students… only to find that there were none (that I could find, anyway). It’s like everyone thinks we’re all eight year old boys and never go to college.
So, to be honest, I’m still figuring all of this out, but I am totally willing to share it with you.
-A formal diagnosis is a necessity. As much as I love and support self-diagnosers, colleges don’t. In order to get accommodations, you need the paperwork. If you think you can get by without the accommodations, more power to you, friend.
-Accommodations don’t cover sensory or social issues. In order to deal with his, I’ll usually wait until. after the first class, and explain to the instructor that I have other things that need to be accommodated. I’ll say that my disability includes sensory and social issues, so I will sometimes not be able to participate in group activity, or that I will need to leave the room if it’s too overwhelming. Obviously, some instructors are better about it than others, but I have not yet come across one that has outright refused.
-Knowing how you learn is a must, in terms of both the classroom and on your own. We’ll have a full post on this, but for example, when I’m given new information, I need time to sit alone with it before I can either move on or join in a group activity. Having this knowledge can obviously help me learn more efficiently, but I can also better explain why I need the time alone.
-Comfort items and stim toys (if you have them) can be very useful. A lot of disabled people need as much control over their environment as possible. One of the ways I try to accomplish this is by wearing very comfortable clothes every day. I almost exclusively wear leggings and t-shirts, with either a long flannel shirt or my denim vest. The vest is both a comfort item and a stim toy- It has studs across the shoulders, so it’s super heavy, and I also set it on my lap and feel the studs. Maybe even finding something to do during class to otherwise keep your hands busy can help: in high school, I would spend most of math class making paper cranes.
-It is okay to make mistakes, there are often things that are out of your control, and having one thing be messed up doesn’t mean that everything is. This one has been a hard one for me to learn- and I still am learning it. It’s very easy for me to feel like a failure, so as soon as something that is out of my control makes me get off-track (even a little bit, like, even if I only need to postpone my work for a day or two and nothing has affected my grades yet) with my schoolwork, I’m convinced that utterly everything is ruined and it is all my fault. This is a faulty assumption. I still have plenty of time to get done what I need to get done, and to earn a perfectly respectable grade.
So, there you have it. That’s really all I could think of for the moment, but if you have something more specific for us to tackle, please let us know!
