They're sitting in the dark watching the movie Nigel picked that Saturday when Adam gasps and grabs hold of his shoulder, bringing him entirely out of the slasher bloody mess.
He just stares at him, feeling Adam trembling, and his whispered, "This is scary, Nigel, why do you like movies like this?" is barely heard as Nigel realizes what's happening.
Adam is seeking comfort.....in him.
Nigel can't remember anyone ever seeking comfort in him, not once his entire fucking life, and he just sits there in the dark for the rest of the movie in awe that he somehow tricked Adam into thinking he's not the fuck up he knows he is.
He wraps his arm around him, pulling Adam against his shoulder, and whispers, "I....like to be scared, Star."
Adam looks up then, his beautiful face peppered over by the lights of the movie, and Nigel's breath catches.
Shit. He loves him.
He fucking loves him.
Nigel gets up then and mumbles, "Be right back," heading to the bathroom where he throws water over his face, staring at himself in the mirror.
He doesn't even deserve to be allowed near Adam let alone love him.
Adam is the only good thing in his life the past six months other than the bar doing hand over fist for cash, and while his sex life has shriveled up and died it didn't matter.
Adam mattered.
Now here he was, becoming Adam's comfort and falling in love with him like this was one of those fucking Hallmark movies.
He sighs, psyching himself up for going back, and then hears a knock at the door.
"Nigel? The movie is over."
Nigel unlocks the door and sees Adam there in his hallway, just steps from his bedroom, and frowns. "Sorry, Darling I...."
"Did you get too scared too? It's ok if you did, you like getting scared, right?" Adam asks, smiling, "We can watch the last half again if you want, I'll just look away when they start screaming."
"Adam...."
"It's not that I'm very afraid, I just don't really like the blood and gore, and the ending wasn't really all that frightening I just...."
"'Star...."
"....think that they could've ended it differently and made things seem much more realist...."
"I WASN'T FUCKING SCARED, OK?"
Adam freezes, his smile fading, and he looks away. "Oh. I....I should go home now. I'm...."
He practically runs off and Nigel curses, thinking of just letting him go, and then he chases Adam to the door grabbing him from behind.
"Adam, wait!"
"Let me go, Nigel!"
"No, Darling, just let me...."
Adam pushes him off, nearly slapping him, and Nigel doesn't fight, just stares at him in the dark the title screen on the DVD playing bright enough to light his pretty face.
"I'm not happy with you right now," Adam says, tearing up, "I....I want to yell and I....I don't like yelling so I'm just going home. You can apologize to me tomorrow."
"Adam...."
"Please, Nigel, just...."
Nigel grabs his hands, no longer fucking caring, and holds them tight in his own. "I was scared," he admits, watching Adam frown as he flips on the light, turning him against the door.
"But you said...."
He sighs. "I was scared because I realized you were....you clung to me, Star, and took comfort in me and I don't think anyone's ever fucking done that ever."
"Why does that scare you, Nigel?"
Nigel blinks back tears and smiles. "Because I.....it made me realize that I....."
"Nigel, you can tell me anything. We're friends, we tell each other a lot of things. Remember when I told you that I enjoy certain types of pornography more than others? That I like the ones where they hold the other person down a lot and you...."
Nigel feels a tear fall down his cheek as he reaches out to touch Adam's face. "I fucking love you, Star," Adam blinks, eyes wide, and Nigel just sighs, "And I know it's really not in the cards for us, I do, but I wanted you to know that. I love you more than I've ever loved anything and I.....I just wanted to tell you. That's all."
Adam doesn't move, just stares like a deer caught in headlights, and Nigel steps back almost embarrassed.
"You don't have to say anything, Darling. I just..." he grabs the back of his neck, feeling a blush rise up in his cheeks, "....wanted you to know I wasn't mad I was just not entirely ready to have my whole life change tonight. So...."
"Are you sure?"
Nigel turns to look at Adam again, his soft whisper making Nigel's heart race, and he sees tears on Adam's face.
"What?"
"Are you sure you love me, Nigel? We're very good friends and friends sometimes love each other. I've never had many friends but my father's friend Harlan is still a very close friend of mine and I consider him family and I love him so.....maybe you...."
Nigel steps close, reaching out with both hands, and puts them on Adam's cheeks pressing their foreheads together.
"Star, this isn't like Friend Harlan, yeah? I wanna kiss you, I wanna....hear the noises you make when we're fucking, and I.....I want to taste every inch of you. I want...."
Adam gasps, stepping forward, and kisses him with a lot more passion than Nigel expects, letting himself be turned against the door, and soon it's all he can think about.
Adam.
Adam.
Adam.
They kiss till they're both barely able to breathe on the couch for what feels like hours, and when Adam breaks for breath he buries his face into Nigel's neck shaking.
"I love you too, Nigel."
Nigel closes his eyes. "Star....."
Adam moves away, and puts a hand on his face. "Look at me, Nigel."
He does, tearing up again, and Adam smiles down at him.
"I love you."
Nigel smiles. "Are you sure?"
Adam makes a face. "Nigel, I'm very...."
He pulls him down again, grinning, and kisses him softly, fingers brushing his cheek. "Darling, I was fucking with you."
"Oh. Well I...."
Nigel can't stop smiling. "You know I was thinking in the bathroom that this isn't like one of those fucking Hallmark movies but it kinda is, isn't it? Two friends both confessing their love on a couch watching a shitty movie. It's like it was written by some idiot too stupid to know how to properly write a romance."
Adam frowns. "But Nigel, isn't it a proper romance? I.....I find it very romantic."
His smile fades. "Well, I wasn't...."
Adam sits up, straddling him, and sighs. "I was thinking that I was going to remember tonight for the rest of my life and now you're saying that this is stupid and I...."
Nigel pulls him down and hugs Adam tight, pressing his lips to Adam's ear. "Darling, I didn't mean.....I meant it was cliche, that's all. I just.....I wanted to give you the stars and the fireworks and....all that. That's all. Halloween is in two days and if I'd waited another week I could've done it at that Star Show thing we're going to. You would've...."
Adam pushes his arms off and lifts his head, smiling down at Nigel.
"I think it's perfect, Nigel I....I think it's not like a Hallmark movie at all."
Nigel smiles. "Why is that?"
"Because in Hallmark movies they don't have do anything other than kiss and I'd very much like to touch you under your clothes before we go to bed tonight. I want to hear the sounds you make when you ejaculate."
Nigel's cock twitches, and he finds it hard to breathe.
"Yeah?"
Adam nods. "Very much not like a Hallmark movie."
He smiles, hands coming up under Adam's shirt, and the way his breath catches make Nigel groan.
"Then, Star, let's get started. I wouldn't want to make you wait."
Adam leans in and kisses him softly.
"I love you, Nigel."
Nigel's hands come up under the back of his shirt and Adam whimpers as he presses lips to his ear.
"I love you too, Adam. So fucking much."
He rolls them over, already close to falling apart, and staring down at Adam's flushed cheeks and eager smile for a moment he can't believe he was wrong.
Maybe he fucking died and went to heaven.
Or he'd gone into a goddamned coma and was daydreaming.
This?
Having this?
He didn't deserve, not one fucking bit, but if anyone ever tries now to take Adam from him, he'll kill them.
And then comfort Adam after.
It's what he has, not what he deserves, and he'll take it.
Because by some miracle Adam loves him.
Adam......loves.....him.
This might not be a Hallmark movie.
But it's their love story.
It's theirs.
