The Green Lion- Green is an important color in alchemy representing one of the seven stages of the alchemical process. The green lion represents vitriol, or sulfuric acid, green in its natural state. It dissolves all metals leaving behind gold. The green lion is often depicted devouring the sun. This represents the stage where the soul is dissolved of any impurities, allowing access to the higher self. Vitriol is an acronym for a Latin verse that translates to “Visit the interior of the Earth and by regifting what you find you will discover the philisopher’s stone. The green lion devouring the sun is “aqua regia” a combination of nitric and hydrochloric acid. In plant alchemy the green lion represents the raw force of nature, the herbs themselves and their chlorophyll blood. Here it is depicted on the strength card. Oil of vitriol is very strong and corrosive. The woman is triumphantly riding this powerful lion carrying a heart on fire. The sun and moon both pour their energy together representing a balance between the solar and lunar, masculine feminine parts of the self. Lady’s Mantle is one of my favorite non-baneful herbs! It’s beautiful little leaves are intricately folded up like origami paper and unfurl into these beautiful cloak-like leaves. It’s matin name means “little alchemist” because of the dew that collects in its leaves at night. This was believed to be the liquified light of the moon and would be collected by alchemists for their preparations because of its transmutational properties.
