Think of this as an emergency guide to Spanish; let´s say you meet a Spanish native speaker and you don´t want the language barrier to be as present as it would be if you came completely unprepared for a simple introduction. This will allow you to introduce yourself and get into a conversation with a group of people, even if you don´t follow with the rest of it.
Let´s start with greetings!
Hola - Hello
Buenos días – Good morning
Buenas tardes – Good afternoon
Buenas noches – Good night
Mi nombre es [tu nombre] – My name is [your name]
Gusto en conocerte – Nice to meet you
Ella (f) / él (m) es [person´s name] – She/he is [person´s name]
No hablo español muy bien – I don´t speak Spanish very well
Now, some questions that might follow immediately after the greeting
¿Cómo estás? – How are you?
¿Qué haces? – What are you doing?
¿Cómo va tu día? – How is your day going?
¿Quién es él/ella? – Who is he/she?
¿Quién eres tú? – Who are you?
¿Qué quieres? – What do you want?
Then, some answers to the questions above!
Bien – Good/Well
Mal* – Bad
Excelente – Excellent
Gracias – Thank you
Por favor – Please
Perdón – Sorry
Time to practice! Here´s a dialogue between two strangers so you can see in action what you have learned so far.
PEDRO: ¡Hola! / Hello!
CECILIA: Hola, ¿cómo estás? / Hello, how are you?
PEDRO: Muy bien, ¿y tú? / I´m well, and you?
CECILIA: Estoy excelente, gracias por preguntar / I´m excellent, thank you for asking
PEDRO: Mi nombre es Pedro / My name is Pedro
CECILIA: Mi nombre es Cecilia, gusto en conocerte. ¿Cómo te va, Pedro? /My name is Cecilia, good to meet you. How is it going, Pedro?
PEDRO: Estoy mal*, he estado enfermo / I´m not well, I have been sick.
CECILIA: ¡Lo siento mucho! / I´m very sorry!
*In Spanish you can say “Estoy mal/I´m bad” when answering the question of “How are you?”, and it won´t mean you´re a morally bad person, as it refers to your overall well-being. If they are asking about your health, you could say “Estoy malo/mala” (first one is masculine, the second one feminine).
Now, you shouldn’t worry too much about using the “formal you” or pronunciation, since this interaction will be brief and the native will probably understand that you´re a complete beginner.
I think that´s all, I hope everything is clear and it can help you with your Spanish learning. If you want me to do a separate post in the future about a specific topic, I´ll do my best! Good luck!
