He didn't want to die as the Outsider. He wanted to die with his name, at the very least.  Which was why he was genuinely surprised when it freed him from the Void.

“The Outsider Walks Among Us.”   Just been playing around with photoshop trying to learn it, still a long way to go, I spent an hour on something completely different which I ended up scrapping and ended up with this instead somehow... Those paintings you can find regarding the Void, there is someone (not always the Outsider) in the paintings with a long coat, and I have come to the headcanon that it's Emily Kaldwin from when she was visiting the Outsider's shrines in Dishonored 2/Dust District ~
