Why do I always end up shipping people who don't end up together or it takes them forever to get together?

I honestly thought when the PotC movies came out when I was a kid I thought Elizabeth's love interest was Sparrow and not Will. Now that I'm older, why is it I just realized that Norrington loved Elizabeth truly after re-watching them when I got older and watching them in sequence?
