This is a choropleth map of Washington DC’s positive cases of COVID-19 as of April 10 (source: https://coronavirus.dc.gov/page/coronavirus-data).

Is it just me or is that legend useless? Would appreciate someone explaining to me how it actually makes sense and I’m just reading it wrong (assuming, of course, that it’s not just bad mapmaking).

While I’ve moved on from focusing on spatial epidemiology, I’m still highly interested in the intersection of society and environment; it's just that I've discovered that I'm more interested in the policy questions than research and that I'm more interested in the broader question of climate change's impact on public security. That might include anything from access to clean water, conflict driven by changing resource availabilty, or health generally (as in this story).

The vector mosquito in question -- Aedes aegypti -- prefers warmer climates and is said in the article not likely to occur in the US. It sort of already does occur, however, and as average temperatures rise it's not impossible that we'll see its range expand further north.

Climate change. Security. Public Health. It's a thing.

Semi-Irrelevant Post

I've just started working on my Master's degree in Geography, with my specialization in spatial epidemiology. I just watched Contagion and it was probably the best disaster movie I've seen ever. I've talked to some people with more knowledge of spatial epidemiology than I have, and they agreed: the science in this movie is the best you're likely to see in a disaster movie (contrast with The Day After Tomorrow or, God forbid, 2012).
