Rule #76: No excuses, spay like a champion.

(heads up to my 10ish awesome and loyal followers: I'm going to try my hand at blogging The Vet School Experience (tm), so! warnings for descriptions of disease processes, animal bodily functions, medical jargon, +/- pictures of medical things will apply. I try not to be too graphic in my descriptions, but I also know that my idea of "cool!" and other peoples' idea of "gross!" have a fair amount of overlap, so feel free to block the tag "vet school life" if cool/gross things are not for you. and by all means, if I forget to tag a thing, just let me know!  I'll also try to keep everything under a Read More so no one gets blindsided)

ok? ok. here we go!

Preparing for our first surgeries (cat spays!) next week, and the head tech/HBIC Pati came in to give the whole class a pep talk about what to expect, basic rules, etc.

it went something like this:

Rule #1. Don't fight over cats!! every year we say this, and every year someone has a breakdown over which cat they did or did not get. (did you think vet students were sane, rational adults? spoiler alert: nope)

Rule #2. EAT LUNCH!! do not face plant into your cat's abdomen because you were too nervous too eat beforehand. Put SOMETHING in your mouth ahead of time.

Rule #3. PEE!!! because you don't want to go through the process of scrubbing and gowning and gloving and THEN decide you have to go. And no, we will not be coming with buckets for you to pee into.

Rule #4. We will push your glasses up your nose for you. We will tuck back hair if it comes loose. We will even scratch itches for you, but anything below the waist is yours to deal with.

Rule #5. If you think you have an emergency - SCREAM. someone will come running.

Rule #6. Every year someone faints. Don't let it be you. If you feel dizzy/light-headed/nauseated -  step away from your cat and sit on the floor.

Rule #7. It's going to be chaotic, but it's also going to be ok.

After this talk, I had a lovely dream in which I forgot to eat, forgot to pee, was late for the procedure, AND then proceeded to trip and fall and touch all of the sterile things on my way down, thereby basically ruining everything. I haven't had a such a vivid "you aren't good enough for vet school!!1!" dream since my first year; guess I was due :)
