Fallout 4 Blog: S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes and the eradication of “Skills”
Alright so this is a bit overdue but it is because I have been watching content drops and waiting until I had a bit more confirmation about how the leveling system would would for this installment of Fallout. When I started this series, I didn’t imagine that there would be a huge change to the system, but as I originally started to write I discovered that the “Skills” attributes have been completely removed from the game and folded into SPECIAL attributes and Perks. In both Fallout 3 And Fallout New Vegas - Skills, Special Attributes, and perks were all various ways in which to level each character build. It seems like a ton, however, this as I’ve mentioned in my intro article and my character creation article are all reasons why game play is so versatile.
At first, I was annoyed by the cut of skills, because there simply wasn’t that much released about how the designers planned to make up for cutting out such a huge aspect of character customization. As I delve in, I find that it’s not so devastating and in many cases quite helpful in the evolution of the game without taking away variety. Let’s Dig in.
By eradicating skills, SPECIAL attributes have evolved to encompass some of the skills that have been left behind. Each letter of the word S.P.E.C.I.A.L stands for a certain attribute, just as in previous games, but it seems they are responsible for different things than before. These are the core attributes of a character and are chosen at the beginning of the game, with few other opportunities to change them. Each player is given a total of 21 points to put into these 7 Attributes in any way they so choose. [ This is a lower number than any of the previous games have given us so one can assume that there will be other ways to advance these attributes further.]
Strength - A measure of your raw physical power. It affects how much you can carry, and the damage of all Melee Attacks. This is interesting because Melee use to be its very own skill but now it has been folded into your strength attribute therefor absolving the need for it as a skill.
Perception - Your environmental awareness and “sixth sense”. It affects all weapon accuracy in the V.A.T.S system. The Perception attribute used to govern things like how far away you could detect enemies and things of that nature but now what were Previous Skills for “Energy Weapons” or “Guns” Have been folded into it.
Endurance - A Measure of your overall physical fitness. It affects your total Health and the action point drain from sprinting. This does not confirm any skill has been folded into it, BUT it does confirm that finally sprinting is a thing. I think anyone who has played these games can rejoice at that.
Charisma - Your ability to charm and convince others. It affects your success to persuade in dialogue and prices when you barter.
Intelligence - Intelligence in a measure of your overall mental acuity, and affects the number of experience points earned. This is where things get interesting. This is one of the first confirmations of no skills, because of the first mention of experience points, rather than skill points which you previously would have earned. It makes having a high intelligence imperative to quicker and most likely more efficient leveling.
Agility - Agility is a measure of your overall finesse and reflexes. It affects the number of action points in V.A.T.S. and your ability to sneak. Sneak, used to be its own skill, so we get to see yet another of the core skills form previous games folded into our SPECIAL Attributes. This may mean that a person that does not choose agility from the get go may not have the ability to be sneaky for the duration of the game.
Luck - The Measure of your overall good fortune. It affects the recharge rate of Critical Hits, and your chance at finding better/more valuable items. In New Vegas - This was a Huge deal due to the gambling nature of the game, although it did not previously have any weight on what a player may find in the wasteland.
I personally am super excited to try this out, and rely on the perk system for variety rather than 3 whole leveling systems. In my opinion, It will make choosing the right attributes for the way you want to play beneficial from square one, rather than the more free form feel of past games where the attributes were not nearly as important with the exception of strength.
Tune in next time for a guide to Fallout 4 Perks, and how they affect some long awaited weapon modification system.

PandaReaperX Extra Life Charity
What is Extra Life?
A Charity Project made up of gamer's playing to raise money for Children's Miracle Network. This is such a huge deal, y'all. It gives us as Gamers an opportunity to display our skills and gaming communities in a positive public light while raising money and awareness for Children's Miracle Network and the children that need support both financial and emotional. It gives us a chance to breed hope, as a community. Something really special has happened this year in regards to Extra Life Charity! For the first time, each player [ who marathon games for 24 hours to raise as much money as they can ], may choose which Children's Miracle Network hospital or facility receives their donation. This really could save the life of someone they have a direct relationship with, and that's incredible. What is The full story can be found in the link I've provided.

I decided to ask Panda what motivated him to participate in Etra Life 2015, and what made it directly important to him.
"The Reason why Extra Life is important to me is because a friend of mind actually would go to one of the hospitals supported by Children's Miracle Network, and with Extra-Life I am able to choose the hospital that my donation foes to so I send it to the one he goes to. The Reason I play is because this is a charity that combines 2 of my favorite things; video games and helping people. As some of you may know, I work in the field of child welfare and it is really my passion to be able to change the life of someone who needs help. I often say when asked why I got into the field that I am in, that if I could pay my bills in the order of thank you's then money I would. I see this charity as another way that I can be a positive influence in people's lives. I really believe in the Power of Positivity and how it is a game changer and that's why I do my best to be uplifting. Even when I stream, my entire purpose is to try and change the League of Legends Community. On November 7th, 2015, I'll be doing my 24 hour stream for Extra Life, and maybe I'll have an opportunity to raise enough money to help a family in need."

A Message from Spazbit - RG Creator
I would like to dedicate November 7th to Panda and his stream. I strongly encourage all of you to participate in this. Lets come together as a community, this is what its all about. I think it is so important that we support our own and even if you cannot donate put you're own controller/mouse down and spend a few hours supporting him by just watching and encouraging his cause. If you're a league player shoot him a message and join in his streaming fun! If you can donate, no amount is too small. This is a great cause, and Panda is such a positive face in the gaming world, and in Rangers. He AND Children's Miracle Network deserve the Support of Rangers Gaming.
