Well I just went from 0 interest to a solid 5.5?

**Light, non-narrative spoilers follow**

OK so like full disclosure, it’s not like I don’t have my reservations, it’s not a ‘pacific-rim-will-change-your-life’ unreserved rec: i’d never get in the way of people enjoying Not Enjoying something (hating things together is a joy forever!), but like my reaction was I’LL SEE THAT AGAIN IMMEDIATELY PLS so clearly significant parts of my brain lit up in the good ways. I have like a molecular-level loyalty to the ‘91 version so I’ll always have my ‘but it’s not [the thing the way it was!]’ about some aspects, and that’s just my load to bear, but for me this one managed to do it’s own thing in enough ways to convince me it was enjoying itself?? if that makes sense??  (I like films that decide what they are, be that specifically, and enjoy it)

I feel like the pros and cons were not directly related so it’s not like I sat there having to mentally compare like-for-like, you know? Things that were bad in one place were better in entirely OTHER places?? For example, I miss Paige O’Hara’s beauuuuutiful vocal clarity (EW just isn’t going to match a broadway professional! she just isn’t! it sounds small!), but at the same time I was enjoying EW’s sort of ‘self-contained but driven’ characterisation in ways where it differed from the ‘doe-eyed line pleasantness’ of the physicality of the 90′s drawings? (or even of the Branagh Cinderella which was excellent at capturing that floaty movement and big-eyed soft-focus in filmed people, but Belle as a character I prefer a little more stompy and direct in her movements). And like the con of the ballgown (yeah the skirt is actually great in motion, but the top is just.....No. Nope. No.) is on one hand, but then pro of the blue Town Dress is SIGNIFICANT. Like I’m going to have a Thing about that town outfit, it’s going to be MY OUTFIT. The textures, holy shit. Prepare yourselves. Con, there wasn’t enough Cogsworth, but pro, Kevin Kline’s Maurice was on like another level of abstracted melancholy Kevin Kline-ness. 

So like the whole thing was balanced differently to the ‘91, if that makes sense. Less weight here, more weight there, lose something here, gain something there. 

TL;DR: Gugu Mbatha Raw should still have been Belle, that is just FACT, but aside from that grief I was buying what they were selling. And what they were selling was ‘i took a whole buncha drungs and walked into the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris’.
