Hunterian Museum London Visit
The Hunterian Museum was initially built to support practicing surgeons and doctors with their studies as its next to the Royal College of Surgeons.
The studies offer more than the anatomy but also fill many people with curiosity as the approach certain specimens that may be quite macabre or may be beautiful pieces of art within themselves.
What I found most captivating was the processes and the techniques that must have been used to preserve such fragile matter for so many years and from this collection how they used this method to document certain diseases, birth defects and formation ect.
Image 5 shows the all the nerves in the human body, a deceased human body was placed on the slab of wood and was left to decay and dry out until only the nerves were left thus helping surgeons understand the nerves system. As an art piece it tells a story within itself. Aesthetically it gives a very real and organic feel being art in its self.
This trip was very successful in the end, as I walked around with many other curious visitors I found myself in a surreal environment of almost re-animated life which relates to my interest in taxidermy. As a place to research or to just to find yourself engulfed by inquisitive specimens its a fascinating place to visit.
