New Home Blessing

When you move into a new home, it is a good time to welcome Hestia to your hearth. This spell is best done when your home is empty, but even if you moved in a while ago, this simple ritual will ignite her presence. In the "heart" of your home, take a broom and start to sweep, moving in a clockwise direction. Sweep around the area three times, chanting:

Hestia of the Hearth and home, Bless this space I call my own. Make my household Trouble free, Dearest Hestia, Make it be.

Now brush the dust outside and bring in a table or chair to use as an altar. Place fresh flowers and baked goods on your altar. Sprinkle salt in each corner of the room in a clockwise direction (this keeps the negative spirits away). Open the windows and let the sunshine in.

Never worked with Hestia and not really tied to the Greek Pantheon, but given that I will FINALLY have a real home, it may be time to consider poking at Frigga.

A lot of New House Spells that I’ve seen are variations on this theme. I imagine that doing a general sweep of the house should also be done first, along with putting up wards to keep stuff from coming back in once you’re done, but I do think this works as a final cap to dedicate witch space.

🌱Seeds of Connection🌱

A spell to help instigate a new relationship Disclaimer: This spell is not categorized as a love spell. It is simply a catalyst to help begin a new relationship- platonic or romantic- but only if there is already a spark from both parties! You will need: 🌱seven apple seeds 🌱a small mirror 🌱a candle (any color) 🌱string (any color, approximately 12” long) 🌱a taglock of the other person (can be their initials written on paper, a photo of them, or a sigil) 🌱a small container (can be a jar, a small box, or a ziplock bag) 🌱a pair of scissors 1. Sit for a moment and think about all you know about this other person; their likes, dislikes, their physical appearance, and what you have in common. If you don’t know much about them, think about things you would like to know about them instead.

2. Light the candle (practicing proper fire safety techniques) and say:

“As a match strikes forth the flame I strike forth to do the same. A bond I seek between us two But only if there’s feelings true.”

3. Take the taglock and hold it next to your face. Situate yourself so that your face and the taglock are illuminated by the candle’s flame.

4. Using the small mirror, look at your reflection. Slowly rotate the mirror so that the light sides across your face from side to side and say:

“Watch the light play to and fro With every pass the seeds will grow.”

5. Carefully drip a bit of wax onto the taglock, and press the apple seeds in to it. Add more wax on top to seal the seeds in.

6. Fold the taglock (being careful not to dislodge the seeds and wax), and using the string, physically tie it to yourself. Envision the bond between the two of you growing from the seeds.

7. Carefully cut the string- do not untie it!- and place it and the taglock in your container of choice. Keep it somewhere safe. If no relationship has begun by the next new moon, disassemble the bag and dispose of the materials- this means that there was no plutonic connection and the items should be discarded. Reference: Lynchpin Spells

I got a spell request for a major enchantment, and after giving it some thought I decided the best way to do it would be to make it a lynchpin spell.

A lynchpin spell is, in essence, two or more larger workings that are tied together and “triggered” by a single object.

Lynchpin spells are often more complex, and I firmly place them in the Witchcraft 201 or 301 area. I personally tend to advise new Witchlings to stay away from casting such complex workings until they have more experience; the workings require a significant amount of pre-work and energy.

Story Magic

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. If you follow this blog at all, you probably know that I adore Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, particularly the Witches books (Granny, Nanny, and Tiffany are the best!). Anyway, one of the main themes of several of the books is the power that stories have, not just over our minds, but sometimes over our lives. The ways a powerful enough Story can actually change the course of our lives if we get caught up in it. 

I’m also a writer, so a lot of how I communicate is through stories. And because it’s so important to me, I’ve often been trying to find ways to incorporate writing into my witchcraft. So all this got me thinking, about how to turn a story into a sort of spell. Or turn a spell into a story. 

Either way, crafting the story around your intention would be the first step. Then you have to shape the story properly, i.e. edit it all while keeping your intention for the magic in the forefront of your mind. Finally, the story itself would need to be engaging and well-written enough to spark the imaginations of readers, and find more readers. Because that’s where the power of stories comes from, the belief of the readers. Stories, if they get big enough, can change the way we see the world. 

This is not a type of magic I think is simple, or always reliable (unless you’re already a big-name professional author perhaps). Nor is this something to address short-term problems. Writing takes time, and it can only be rushed so much, especially if the idea is to get the story out there into the public consciousness. This is also a sort of magic designed for big, more public problems, though you could incorporate smaller personal problems into it as well. But it’s definitely one I’m going to be exploring a little bit. I’ve already started a story (and now I just gotta get it all WRITTEN. Grr. This is where the hardest part comes in, sustaining the effort long enough to finish even a short story). I’m still deciding if it feels like the intention needs to be built in from the first word on the page, or if you can repurpose older stories through intention and work toward a more focused magical goal.

Hello would you be able to help me out eith my don't notice me spell? I'm not sure which herbs to add. Just have wolfsbane and potato peels on the list so far. lol

Hrm.  I would be sure to add ferns, or at least their spores. Sardonyx (the stones) are said to be good for invisibility type spells as well. This is also the type of spell I would say to make into a wearable charm. Either sew it all up in a little bag to be worn as a necklace, or use the ingredients to imbue some sort of knot-magic jewelry (bracelet, ring, necklace, etc).

Is there such a thing as a writing witch? and can this have negative unforeseen consequences? (translation: was starting to doubt what little sanity i had left until i started writing with the intention of "sealing" the nasty little voice in the back of my head inside said writing. Once i finished with a very short scene, i seemed more in control and am worried i might have moved him from inside my head to inside the journal.)

I actually do this intentionally. I am a firm believer of writing down negative thoughts one cannot shake with as much detail and personification as needed to sleep peacefully. If the weight of it is truly gone by morning, I reread the writings to confirm that I need to be rid of them altogether forever, and I burn the paper outside. I either take the ashes somewhere they can fly away or wet the ashes down until it’s like thin glue and then bury them.

I’ve been told by more than a handful of non-practicing acquaintances that this has helped them immensely.

I have never experienced negative consequences and the only ones I could foresee would be writing out and destroying something you would regret letting go later.

A great spell to find something lost that I made up the other day tehehehe It's towards St. Anthony, the Saint of lost things. And yeah, it's kind of childish. Feel free to twice it as you will. "Tony tony turn around, Something's lost and must be found! My (whatever) is missing And I need it for (why you want/ need it) Please help me find it!" I repeat it while I search vigorously, letting myself be guided by instinct (if you can call it that).

Sometimes the easiest things to remember are childish. I like the simplicity to this.
