Spell: The RPG - New Content!

A new edition of Spell: The RPG is underway and I'm looking for feedback from you to help! Many of the core rules are staying streamlined and have mostly undergone clarification. Here's the fun part: The "Extra & Optional Rules" section will be expanded to include a bunch of new goodies. Below is a list of topics already planned for you to weigh in on. Following, there's a section for you to submit topics you'd like to see included. Thank you as always for your support! This survey will close December 31, around midnight, but I'm also going to be doing New Years things, so I might be late.

now the question is do i go ahead and use the worldbuilding for my other campaign with them and save myself some effort, or go whole-hog on two different things at once....

-Math/science nerd Speakers using equations, because intent matters just as much as actuality. “PMV!” “What?” “Momentum f****r!” *punch to the face with superspeed*

Acronyms, formulas, shorthand: if it’s something the Speaker understands, they can cast it. Don’t worry, there are guidelines for dealing with any arguments that may come up.

Also, keeping this on the down-low, but there may be an expansion somewhere along the lines that uses punctuation, wildcards, and other special characters. One step at a time though.

Oh yeah. Totally this. Speakers interpret and translate the universal language in whatever way they understand. If the character can speak another language, they can cast spells in that language as well. At this time, Spell is an English language game, but don’t let that stop you from using any spells in another language (don’t sweat the accent marks).

Secret languages is certainly a neat idea, though I doubt it’d be the easiest way out. Creating and memorizing a language, or even a simple cipher, can be difficult. The letter distribution of Spell is optimized for English words, so—ideally—English would already be well-suited for the most commonly occurring letters. It’s also difficult to anticipate what specific letters you were going to get. Ultimately, if the language was simple and contained short and meaningful words—and not just “ba” means “a gun that shoots other guns” and “el” means “all of Superman’s powers”—and was well thought out by the players, then I’d say go for it. In fact, creating such a language could be a fun main storyline for a campaign.

There’s a wonderful discussion going on here about Spell! How do you feel about gimmicky mechanics in tabletops?

-Friends competing with each other for who can make the best spell using so many (fake) tiles pulled in so many rounds, or the best one-word spell, or the closest to an actual sentence.

Oh yeah, competitions totally exist. Whether bets between friends, duels between rivals, or international competitions of the grandest scale, Speakers like to flex their magic muscles. Not everyone is so humble to keep their amazing magic limited to only fake spells either, so these can get flashy.

More in line with what your thinking, Words with Friends is probably like a training regimen for Speakers. I bet they get to all the crosswords first too.

Another great example of a the decision making that goes into casting a spell. I guarantee this will come up: sometimes the best spell isn’t always the right spell. In that situation, what would you do?
