Why is show spelled as shew in Jane Austen novels? Chuse for choose, and surprize for surprise? (English is not my first language so I found it a bit strange 😅)
At the time Austen wrote, English spelling wasn't fully standardized and our vowels are a bit loosey goosey when it comes to what sounds they make... Also, say "show" in a British accent and you get "shew".
There are different spelling systems by country, even today. I use Canadian spelling (colour instead of color, favourite instead of favorite, centre instead of center). The British also use extra "u"s and avoid the use of "z" in words like "surprise". American spelling is the most common and the default on most devices and word processors. I switch mine to British because it's the closest to Canadian.
I hope that makes it somewhat clear. Also kudos to you for reading Jane Austen in your second language! That's awesome.
