House approves DHS funding, other final spending bills amid ICE uproar

Only seven Democrats joined most Republicans in approving the Homeland Security bill ahead of a Jan. 30 shutdown deadline.

One Republican voted against funding ICE with no guardrails at all.

Quick Update

Work on the budget is continuing even with all of the hoopla and distraction of the ongoing Impeachment Inquiry.

On Tuesday the Senate began consideration of H.R. 3055, the combined Commerce/Justice/Science, Ag/RuralDev/FDA, Interior/Education, Military Construction/VA, and THUD appropriations act (that’s five in one, people).

The Senate has already voted to close debate on H.R. 2740, which combines Labor/HHS/Education, Defense, State/ForeignOps, and Energy/Water, last Thursday.

Amendments are being proposed and passed so even if the Senate does act to pass either of these minibus appropriation bills, they will have to either go back to the House or go to conference committee before being approved by both chambers again.

Meanwhile, the three remaining bills, Financial Services (H.R.3351/S.2524), Homeland Security (H.R.3941/S.2582) and Legislative Branch (H.R.2779/S.2581), have all cleared both House and Senate committees. The bills must pass the House before the Senate can act. Financial Services did so on June 26. Votes should be forthcoming on Homeland Security and Legislative Branch appropriations.

We have exactly four weeks left until the current CR runs out.
