Man it was hard to choose from my pile of WIPs for this one. But I’m gonna go with a small excerpt from something I’ve had in the back of my mind for a long time. I really hope I can devote more time to this story one day…

“Were you having a go at me before?” Trevor demands.

“What on earth are you talking about?”

“You told me your name was Spencer! And then there I was yesterday evening, talking to one of the other gentlemen about the few other acquaintances I’ve managed to make here, and I have to learn from him that you’re Lord Charles Agnew.”

Ah. So that’s it then.

Spencer presses his tongue into the lower corner of his mouth. He hadn’t meant to deceive the lad, not exactly. But he should’ve known better. Anonymity is a gift that was stripped from Spencer at the moment of his birth.

“I hate the name Charles,” he eventually says. “It’s my grandfather’s name. Never suited me.”

Trevor, however, does not seem ready to accept that as an answer.

“We talked for hours. Surely you had ample opportunity to confess who you truly are. Therefore, I can only assume you were having me on. Were you testing me? Trying to see what you could trick me into saying in front of a Marquee’s son?”

He wasn’t. If anything, it was the opposite, though Spencer can’t admit to that. Instead he just shrugs.

“I hate my father too. I make it my personal mission to bring him up as little as possible.”

Finally he seems to have said something right. Trevor’s eyes drag over Spencer’s face, as if he’s still searching for some form of deceit, but eventually his shoulders sag as the fight leaves his body.

“Well—at least that’s something we have in common then.”

Trevor awkwardly hovered next to the client chair, looking at the floor and idly picking at the skin on his arm.

Spencer cleared his throat. "Josh told me you were out sick."

Trevor laughed, but there was no humor in it. "That was his diplomatic way of telling you that I was, uh...having a depressive episode."

"...Trev—"

"I'm okay. I'm okay now. Everything is fine." Trevor's voice shook as the practiced words left his mouth.

"Well—here, let me see your phone." Spencer reached his hand out toward Trevor.

Trevor took his phone from his pocket, an eyebrow raised. "Why?"

"Just—trust me."

Trevor offered up his phone and Spencer took it from him, adding himself to Trevor's contacts before handing it back.

"If you ever need something, just hit me up."

Trevor's face softened as he clutched his phone in his hand. "...Are you sure, Spencer?"

Spencer nodded. "Absolutely. If you just want to talk, or even have somebody sit in silence with you—let me know."

Neither of them said anything for a few beats. Trevor slipped his phone back in his pocket and smiled at Spencer.

"Thanks man. That means a lot."

Spencer smiled back at him. "No need to thank me."

"He said he couldn't stay with someone who refused to decide what it was he actually wanted. Which is...fair. But it just feels like he chose to give up on us instead of trying to fix it."

Trevor stood side by side with him in silence, leaning against the railing. His hand found Spencer's shoulder again, and gave him a playful shove.

"Well...he's an idiot who doesn't know what he's missing."
