in regards to the Raimi spider-man movies I do often say that a throuple is the only thing that could have fixed Peter and MJ and Harry but only on the sense that it would be a sort of containment field for a lot of their most neurotic and self sabotaging behaviors. each member of this triad would absolutely periodically convince themselves that the other two somehow possess a much deeper and more legitimate bond and are only keeping the third one around out of pity or some such nonsense. all three of them will still be insane forever and ever amen but they've already crossed the hurdle that made them MOST insane, ie how much they all want to be dating each other, so the stakes are a lot lower
