the "spider slander" episode of american hysteria is one of my favorites bc a lot of it is just an autistic guy with an academic background in spiders telling chelsey that spiders don't usually bite humans, especially when they (the humans) are sleeping. bc it's such a common myth but also if you think abt it like yeah why would a spider bite something that much bigger than it that wasn't being aggressive and was, in fact, in as non-aggressive a state as possible. it's definitely not gonna be able to eat you.

we've gotten rid of most of the flies in the apartment but the one I just saw in the bathroom was the size of a small bee and I don't like that. I need a #cornerspider stat.

my apartment has flies and there are a ton of them in the bathroom and it makes me want to throw up but I can't bc I'd have to be in the bathroom for an extended amount of time to do that and I don't want to be in there. bc of the flies.

why isn't my corner spider eating them all???

I have now learned about the triangle web spider, Hyptiotes paradoxus. Weird little guys because they are cribellate spiders, which means they are non-venomous and their webs are not traditionally sticky. Instead, their silk is extremely fine and fluffy, and prey is entangled. Once prey is exhausted, the spider wraps it completely before expelling gastric juices to dissolve it, all without otherwise touching the prey.

The triangle spider actually makes itself into a cornerstone of its own triangular web, settling in one corner and manually holding tension. Once prey lands, the spider rapidly contracts and loosens the web to ensure thorough entanglement.

Also weird is that the males have fucking enormous chelicerae, like wiki said “can be on par with the [abdomen]” and I’m like for real? And a quick google search and damn, they were not joking. Females have more normal sized lil chelicerae.

I hate to kill spiders even though I can’t stand them, but there’s this large, fast one practically flaunting that he’s on my bed, and I think I might have to kill it. On the one hand, that’s the consequence of not hiding from me. On the other hand I’d rather not commit murder, and I’m scared of it, like, jumping at me as I try to kill it.

I just caught the angriest little brown funnel weaver I've ever seen. I wish I'd taken pictures but it was so mad omg. It had gotten itself trapped in a plastic bag of Easter stuff I have laying on the floor, so I mean it was rightfully angry, but it was also adorable bc it's 1/18th my size. It bit the envelope I but it on twice. :/ poor thing. But I put it in my grandma's plant, (which has soooo many bugs in it the plant is struggling) and it immediately calmed down and started building a web so yay! But yeah, just an update bc I've caught some funnel weavers before and they've never been so angry. But then again they were never trapped in a bag either... I have another spider post I've been meaning to make too so I'll do that now then while I'm on subject.

they're a baby spider, a juvenile spider anyway, apptly on this species the spots on their back change colors & Falco's spots are between the two colors. teen spider
