It was past her bedtime and she knew it, but tonight there is no Daddy to catch her and tuck her back into bed. He’s gone now. Somewhere else that Mommy says that they can’t visit, not now, not ever. A better place is what all the adults say. Morgan doesn’t know a place that can be better than their home where they fish off the dock and swing on a tire connected to a tree.
With her blanket clutched tightly in her hand she sat down next to Peter. “ There’s a picture of you in the kitchen and the living room,” she supplies after a moment. Brown eyes landed on Peter. He looked just like he had in all the pictures she had seen. “ Daddy told me stories about you too. They’re my favorite.” Peter’s a hero.
He had been gone like her Daddy was but now he’s back now. Something akin to false hope settles in her chest. Maybe the adults are wrong. Maybe he’ll come back like Peter had. Daddy used to say nothing was impossible if you used your brain.
“ Mommy’s asleep so she won’t know but can we have frozen juice pops instead?” she asked hopefully.
