A seasonal display of fruit cases and seeds adds colour to the garden in winter and is probably Euonymus europaeus ‘Red Cascade’ (spindle). This deciduous shrub provides vivid autumn colour of yellow and finally a reddish-purple foliage. It will grow to a height of 3m but responds well to pruning.

Anyway, the euonymus atropurpureus (aka the american/eastern wahoo, burningbush, or hearts bursting with love) is native to the midwestern-to-eastern stretch of the United States. It's also toxic and joining the ranks of "niche Missouri magic trees"!

The autumn colour of Euonymus grandiflorus (large-flowered spindle tree) is supplemented by the pale pink fruit with black seeds and orange arils. This is a strong-growing large shrub or small tree with greenish white flowers in summer.

On the edge of the woodland garden at the Beth Chatto Garden, Essex, the deciduous shrub Euonymus planipes (flat-stalked spindle, Chinese spindle tree) was providing a display of red fruit splitting to reveal orange seeds. As the season continues there will be a spectacular display of autumn foliage colours with a mix of green, red and even white.
