Spiny Eggs Are Not Eggs
So something I've questioned for a while if Spiny Eggs were actually eggs. As established in a previous post with the exception of Yoshis and Piranha Plants, all babies in the world including Koopas are delivered by stork.
Knowing this I've questioned exactly how Spiny Eggs work, since they are a species of turtles. It seemed out of the ordinary since their egg also seemed to be their shell which we know turtles can leave. An on top of that there is the whole stork thing. But eventually I would get my answer when lore hunting in Paper Mario 64.
In Paper Mario 64 when you get Goombario to use Tattle on a Spiny he says Spinys roll into Spiny Eggs and try to slam into Mario. Which we see happen. This actually remembers of how Bowser can roll up into a ball and roll and round in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Also, while I can't confirm this 100%, I recall in Super Mario Galaxy Bowser rolls up into a ball and attacks Mario.
Anyways something else that adds onto Spiny Eggs not being eggs is actually in Super Mario Bros. : The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach. Now while the OVA is indeed not canon to the games, it still information that we can pull from it that parallels to the main games, or contains ideas later games would expand upon. For example, the fact that Piranha Plants are flowers. Anyways in the OVA Mario and Luigi encounter a Lakitu that throws Spiny eggs at them. In this exchange he talks about awakening the Spinys from hibernation. This adds on to the fact Spiny Eggs not being eggs, but it could also indicate they are normally in hibernation mode until released.
