I may have to concede defeat where my right leg is concerned, at least until I see a sports physio. The left is in good working order, though, and manages front splits just fine! Not far till I hit the floor!
What if the gym, specifically weight machines are my new hyperfixation? It’s partly bc they turned it into a game where you can gain points and train through certain programs. But partly bc I just think my abs look really good and my ass is naturally fat so imagine what I can do with consistent leg presses of more than my body weight?
If you’re looking for a way to Improve Yourself(tm) during quarantine but don’t want to invest in a huge time suck, join me in getting mad flexible with the app Splits Training, which gives you the goal of being able to do the splits within 30 days. It’s a daily commitment (every 5 days you get a rest day) but it only takes around 20 minutes to go through the full exercise (I tend to get it done quicker because I skip the 20 sec rests lol). None of the exercises require any equipment, but a yoga mat and possibly some yoga bricks (or anything to give you a couple extra inches of reach if you can’t quite get to the floor) could be helpful. All of the exercises are really easy to adapt to any skill level, so it really doesn’t matter where you’re starting from.
Personally I don’t think I’m going to make it to full splits in a month, but I’ll definitely be ready to start doing the “intermediate” 30-day routine. It’s a free app - there are some ads (when you first open the app and when you complete a full exercise routine) but they haven’t really hurt my experience. There’s a nice voice that talks you through the exercises so you don’t have to watch your screen to know when you’re done with each step.
Improve your legs apart stretch - An easy routine that takes 10 mins
Stretching is one of those things that martial artists always want to improve.
We mistakenly assume that our warm up in class is stretching, well it kind of is, but it won't really improve your range of movement unless you stretch separately.
I put this video together for my own students to help them improve their legs apart stretch. It is very simple and you can do things at your own pace. The beauty is, your stretching the correct areas of the hip, which improves your range of movement.
The thing with stretching is there are so many different ways to do it and once your body adapts then it will need to be challenged again. Keeping your stretching fresh ( I change mine every 12 weeks) helps you keep gaining improvements.
There are videos out there telling you get into the splits in a matter of weeks, in my experience there is no such thing as a quick fix. Stretching takes time, lots of patience, self motivation and correct form, exactly what your martial arts training requires.
If you like this routine, try it 3 times a week for 6 weeks and you should see some very noticeable results!
Week 10 More super fun silks and hoop times! Who'd've thought splits would be so much easier in silks..
