Supernatural Appreciation Week - Day Two: ↳ Side Character Who Deserved Better - Kevin Tran

When I watched the promo for 15x04 the word “cheerleader” immediately caught my attention and made me think of the case Gadreel had Sam working in his mind with the ghoul that only ate dead cheerleaders. Do you have thoughts on this? Do you think it’s an intentional reference to Gadreel’s ruse?

Oh. My. Word.

Okay, so here, have something SUPER META to support this theory.

I’ve talked about how Belpegor was pulling a Zeke, pretending to earn their trust under false pretenses until he got what he actually wanted... so we’ve already been primed to be on the alert for this sort of mischief on the part of the story, right?

I... hadn’t even really paid that much attention to the promo to notice there was a line about a cheerleader.. BECAUSE I’ve suspected that the “red-lit scenes” and possibly even Chuck’s voiceover from the SPPT Promo was gonna be the truly meaty part of the episode with long-ranging implications, while Sam and Dean’s case was going to be more of an emotional distraction for them to sort of... keep them in a holding pattern while Chuck gave himself time to regroup after his “Beg Amara For Help” plan failed.

Which is basically the bigger version of what Gadreel did to Sam in 9.09/9.10. By locking him in his mind working on that cheerleader-eating ghoul case.

Heck... I’m gonna go watch the promo again.

Okay so they ask (the school principal? probably) if the missing girls had anything in common, and she tells them they’re both cheerleaders. If the thing taking them is a ghoul, I’m gonna scream... but either way, here’s the thing in 9.10 (oh hey, coincidentally written by Dabb):

SAM: I mean, it just doesn't make any sense. Why is this ghoul only chomping on dead cheerleaders?DEAN [from the other room]: Hey, you want a beer?!SAM: No, I'm fine.CROWLEY [appearing]: Not bad.SAM [jumping from his chair in shock]: Dean? Dean!CROWLEY: Poughkeepsie.SAM [still on the alert but curious]: How do you know that word?CROWLEY: Because Dean's sent me, Bullwinkle, the real Dean. I'll make this quick – you've been possessed by an angel. He's got you packed away in some dusty corner of your own mind, and I'm here to break you out.SAM [not believing a word of it]: Seriously?CROWLEY: Fine. We'll do this the fun way.[He picks up DEAN's gun from the table and shoots SAM full on in the chest. SAM shakes in shock but then realizes he is fine and not even bleeding.]CROWLEY: See? Not real. Like I said. I know how possession works, Sam. You've seen everything that he's seen, even if you can't remember. That's what I need you to do. I need you to remember.

This was about control, about what was even real, and how everything from perceptions to beliefs to the fact Sam had thought he was interacting with the real world instead of just the inside of his own mind, which was being ENTIRELY CREATED to keep him trapped there.

Just like Rocky’s Bar inside Dean’s mind was for him.

This has been Dean’s belief about the entirety of his reality since Chuck dropped the story and showed his hand in 14.20. The Rocky’s experience is INCREDIBLY FRESH for Dean. He still hadn’t gotten over needing to be “Poughkeepsie’d” out of his own mental trap like that, and now he’s feeling like his own entire life is a mental trap there’s not a Poughkeepsie big enough to fight his way free from.

I’m now INCREDIBLY interested in what I’d thought was going to be the “runaround” half of the episode, and Sam and Dean’s mutual reactions to feeling like they’re being given the runaround by Chuck here. If they even realize it yet that that’s what’s happening, or if they think this is just the sort of hunting they’re left with after Chuck has supposedly left the building.

(because the other half of this episode will be informing *us* very clearly that Chuck hasn’t left the building at all, and still has massive plans for TFW)
